Fourteen Eagles record victories over three matches
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (EMUEagles.com)— The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team bounced back from a 25-6 loss to No. 15 University of Missouri to win duals against Truman University, 47-0, and Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, 38-6, Sunday, Jan. 29, at the SIU-Edwardsville quad. Redshirt freshman Jaylyn Bohl (149 lbs.), redshirt sophomores Alex Ortman (174 lbs.) and Nick Whitenburg (197 lbs.), and redshirt senior Corey Phillips (141 lbs.) recorded two-win performances on the day.
Seventeen EMU grapplers made the trek to Sunday's matches, with 14 earning at least one victory. “It was great to get all the guys we brought some matches today,” said Head Coach Derek DelPorto.
The Eagles ran into a red-hot Missouri squad which sent out six nationally ranked wrestlers to open competition. Phillips and redshirt sophomore Phillip Joseph (174 lbs.) were the only two EMU wrestlers to come up with victories against the Tigers.
“We actually wrestled pretty well against Mizzou,” said DelPorto. “They won close matches and were a little tougher than us in certain situations.”
Phillips fought his way to a 7-4 decision over Nicholas Hucke, while Joseph took care of Dorian Henderson, 6-2.
“Joseph had a great match against a kid ranked higher than him,” remarked DelPorto. “Phillips also had a great day today.”
Eastern Michigan responded by winning all 10 matches against Truman. Redshirt sophomore Greg Egbert (125 lbs.), redshirt freshman Jake Byers (133 lbs.), Whitenburg and redshirt sophomore David Box (heavyweight) all notched pins in their matches. Redshirt junior Alex Ortman also earned a technical fall at 174 lbs. by a score of 18-1.
In the final dual against SIU-Edwardsville, the Green and White was victorious in all but two bouts to cruise to an easy victory. Phillips used a convincing 9-0 major decision to earn his second victory of the afternoon. Likewise, Bohl won his second consecutive match with a pin at the 2:19 mark of the 149 lbs. match.
The Eagles will now prepare for a tough road test Sunday, Feb. 5, against Kent State University in Kent, Ohio.
