Novak 4-0 in MAC bouts with regular season finale on tap Wednesday
KENT, Ohio (EMUEagles.com)— The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team dropped a 28-10 road decision Sunday afternoon, Feb. 5, to No. 14 Kent State University. Redshirt senior Andrew Novak improved to a perfect 4-0 in Mid-American Conference matches and redshirt sophomore Phillip Joseph improved to 3-1 in conference bouts with a pin.
The Eagles (13-6; 2-2 MAC) dropped to 0-5 against ranked opponents this season, while Kent State (12-4; 5-0 MAC) won its 10th consecutive dual and completed its MAC slate undefeated.
The Golden Flashes started off to a 6-0 advantage after No. 4 Nic Bedelyon pinned redshirt sophomore Jared Germaine at the 2:22 mark of the 125 lbs. match. Novak cut the EMU deficit to 6-4 with a 13-5 win over Steve Mitcheff at 133 lbs. The New Boston, Mich. native outscored Mitcheff, 7-1, in the second period which included a pair of nearfall points en route to earning the major decision.
Eastern Michigan dropped its next four matches to fall behind, 18-4. At 157 lbs., redshirt junior Aaron Sulzer fell just short of defeating Mallie Shuster, 7-6. The two grapplers entered the third period tied at five apiece, but Shuster notched the decisive reversal with just over a minute remaining to drop Sulzer to 2-2 in MAC bouts.
Then at 184 lbs., Joseph earned the Eagles six team points with a pin of Brandonn Johnson at the 4:56 mark. Johnson looked to be in control of the match early on when he recorded a takedown and a pair of nearfall points. But Joseph turned the tables late in the second period, pinning Johnson to the mat with just seconds left in the middle frame.
Following Joseph's win, EMU trailed, 18-10, with three matches remaining. The Golden Flashes put the dual out of reach from that point, winning the last three bouts to make the final score 28-10 for KSU.
The Green and White wraps up the 2011-12 regular season Wednesday, Feb. 8, with a home tilt against the University at Buffalo. Action will begin at 7 p.m. inside Bowen Field House.
