Eagles win six consecutive matches in convincing win

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)— The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team won its fourth straight dual Sunday, Jan. 22, by a decisive 22-9 score against Northern Illinois University at Bowen Field House. After the Huskies broke out to a 6-3 lead, the Eagles rattled off six straight wins to down NIU for the first time since 2009.

The Green and White is now 11-4 overall. A 2-1 mark in Mid-American Conference bouts marks the first time since the 2007-08 campaign that the squad has won more than one MAC match in a season.

Sunday's match was highlighted by an impressive 8-0 major decision for redshirt sophomore Khodor Hoballah (184 lbs.) in his first MAC action of the season. Redshirt senior Andrew Novak (133 lbs.) also fought to his third conference triumph in as many chances with a 10-6 decision over Rob Jillard to open the scoring for EMU.

At heavyweight, redshirt sophomore David Box competed in his first-career MAC match, dropping a well-fought 3-1 decision to Jared Torrence.

Northern Illinois (6-7; 0-4 MAC) continues to struggle in conference tussles as it lost for a fourth consecutive time against a MAC school Sunday.

Action began at 125 lbs., where Nick Smith stunned redshirt sophomore Jared Germaine, 13-6. Germaine fought his way to a 4-3 edge after three minutes, but Smith battled back to take a 6-4 lead with an escape and a takedown midway through the second period. Germaine tied the score at six with eight seconds left, but allowed Smith to escape to put the NIU grappler back ahead by one.

Things fell apart for Germaine in the third period, as Smith registered five near fall points and nearly pinned the Saginaw, Mich. native on several occasions. Smith earned NIU an early 3-0 lead.

The 133 lbs. bout started off ominously for Novak, as he fell behind Rob Jillard, 5-2, with two periods remaining. Novak fought his way back to a 6-6 tie in the middle frame with a takedown followed by a pair of nearfall points. In the third period, Novak forced Jillard to surrender a takedown and a stalling point. The New Boston, Mich. native took the match, 10-6, to even the dual, 3-3.

After falling behind, 4-0, to begin the 141 lbs. match, redshirt senior Corey Phillips was never able to make up the difference, losing to Kevin Fanta, 11-5. Phillips found a rhythm at the end of the opening period to pull back to within two, 5-3, but would get no closer as NIU regained the lead, 6-3, after three matches.

A hard-fought first period between redshirt freshman Jaylyn Bohl and Tyler Argue resulted in a 2-2 deadlock at 149 lbs. Argue gained a slight edge over the next two minutes, recording a takedown for a 4-2 lead with one period remaining.

Bohl used an escape and an NIU stalling penalty to pull even halfway through the third period. With the home crowd roaring, Bohl notched the decisive takedown with 39 seconds left for a 6-4 win and a 6-6 in the dual.

Redshirt junior Aaron Sulzer made it two wins in-a-row for the Eagles at 157 lbs. with a 7-1 over Tyler Loethen. Sulzer scored five of his seven points in the first period, recording a takedown and a trio of nearfall points. The Cleveland, Ohio native capped it off with a takedown in the closing minutes to give EMU its first lead of the afternoon, 9-6.

Looking to keep momentum on the home team's side, redshirt senior Lester France busted out to a 4-1 lead with a pair of takedowns at 165 lbs. With France ahead, 6-2, late in the second period, Mougin struck with a takedown and was awarded two nearfall points to pull even, 6-6.

The battle intensified in the final two minutes, with France holding a riding time advantage of better than two minutes. France ensured Eastern Michigan's third consecutive win with a take down in the final 15 seconds plus the point for riding time to earn an 11-8 victory. EMU increased its lead to 12-6 with four bouts left.

A low-scoring affair ensued at 174 lbs., where redshirt sophomore Phillip Joseph held a narrow 2-1 edge over Caleb Busson after five minutes. Joseph turned the pressure on in the final period, registering a pair of takedowns, an escape and riding time for an 8-3 win and a suddenly-commanding 15-6 Eagles lead.

Hoballah took to the mat to face Shane Rosenberry. A takedown and two escapes by Hoballah gave the Dearborn, Mich. native a 4-0 advantage despite a second period in which Rosenberry earned over a minute of riding time. Hoballah turned in a brilliant third period performance, scoring four nearfall points to record an 8-0 major decision for Eastern Michigan's fifth straight triumph.

Redshirt sophomore Nick Whitenburg added more salt in the Huskies' wounds at 197 lbs., winning a 5-2 decision over Mike Lukowski for a 22-6 EMU lead. Whitenburg needed just two takedowns and an escape to lead the Green and White to a sixth-straight win.

Finally at heavyweight, Box was pressed into action for his first-career MAC tussle against Torrence. The score was tied, 1-1, with less than 10 seconds left in the bout, when Torrence took control and managed a takedown for a 3-1 win.

The Eagles are back in action Sunday, Jan. 29, when they head to Edwardsville, Ill. for the SIU-Edwardsville Quad. EMU will take on SIU-Edwardsville, Missouri and Truman State.
