EMU VS. PENN STATE: Penn State and Eastern Michigan have met just once before, a 52-7 Nittany Lion win at Beaver Stadium, Sept. 19, 1991. In that contest, the Eagles were guilty of three interceptions to go along with four fumbles in the setback to 10th-ranked PSU. For a complete recap of that contest, turn to page five of this release.
The Eagles and Nittany Lions are scheduled to meet again on the gridiron in 2013, when Eastern Michigan returns to University Park, Pa. for the non-conference affair.
SECOND STRAIGHT BIG TEN CONTEST: Saturday's EMU-PSU game is the second straight Big Ten Conference matchup for the Eagles and also PSU's second against a Mid-American Conference opponent. Last weekend, Sept. 17, the Eagles lost at Michigan, 31-3, while PSU posted a 14-10 come-from-behind win at MAC foe Temple.
NO STRANGER TO HAPPY VALLEY: While it is just his first trip into Beaver Stadium as a head coach, EMU's Ron English has made the 404 mile trip before. English was a perfect 3-0 against Penn State while an assistant coach at Michigan (2003-07). During that span, the Wolverines posted a 27-25 victory in 2005 at Michigan Stadium, a 17-10 win in 2006 inside Beaver Stadium and a 14-9 triumph in 2007 back at the “Big House.”
COACH TO CURE MD: The EMU coaching staff will be wearing Coach to Cure MD patches this week at Penn State, Sept. 24, to raise awareness and funding for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy research. Fans are encouraged to donate online at www.CoachtoCureMD.org or donate $5 by texting CURE to 90999.
This is the fourth year of the Coach to Cure MD program, which is on track to surpass the million dollar mark for donations this year. The goal is to raise money and awareness of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, which is the most common fatal genetic disorder among boys worldwide.
RETURN TO THE KEYSTONE STATE: The EMU roster features two players from the state of Pennsylvania. Freshman running back Ryan Brumfield is from Chester Springs, Pa., while freshman defensive back Kevin Johnson hales from McKeesport, Pa.
KARUTZ BOOTS IT DEEP: Junior Jay Karutz punted five times for an average of 43.6 yards per kick at Michigan, Sept. 17. Three of those punts finished inside the 20-yard line, with his long of the day traveling 53 yards. For the game, the Wolverines' average starting field position was their own 16-yard line.
GREENE NEARLY SETS THE EMU MARK FOR MOST YARDS RUSHING AT MICHIGAN: Sophomore Javonti Greene nearly set the EMU record for most yards gained by a running back in a single-game at Michigan, Sept. 17. The West Palm Beach, Fla. native picked up 80 yards rushing on 21 carries, falling just short of the standard of 91 yards gained by Dwayne Priest, Sept. 19, 2009.
Greene had 64 yards on the ground in the opening quarter, as Eastern out-gained the Wolverines 140 to 32 in the first frame.
FULKERSON GIVES EMU THE EARLY LEAD AT MICHIGAN: EMU drew first blood against Michigan, as sophomore Kody Fulkerson kicked a 21-yard field goal with 14:55 left in the second quarter. The seven play, 20 yard drive began at the U-M 24-yard line after the Eagles' defense forced the Wolverines to punt from their own end zone. The 3-0 lead marked the first time in 10 trips to Ann Arbor that the Eastern held a lead in a game over Michigan.
LIMITING THE PASS: Eastern Michigan limited Michigan to just 7-of-18 passing for 95 yards and an interception, Sept. 17, the total was the lowest for a Wolverine squad since Sept. 19, 2009, when U-M totalled just 68 yards through the air in a game also against EMU.
FIRST PICK FOR D-SCOTT: Freshman Darius Scott recorded his first career interception at Michigan, Sept. 17, with 9:41 to play in the opening period. The Chicago, Ill. native stepped in front of quarterback Denard Robinson's offering on a 4th-and-5 play inside EMU territory.
PLENTY OF FANS IN THE STANDS: The Eagles will likely play in front of more than 100,000 fans for the second consecutive time this season at Penn State University, Sept. 24. Last week, a crowd of 110,343 saw the Eagles in action at Michigan Stadium. The Big House holds the standard for largest seating capacity with 109,901, while PSU's Beaver Stadium is the next largest at 107,282.
The largest crowd to ever watch an EMU football team in action was the 110,438 in attendance when the Eagles dropped a 59-20 decision at Michigan, Oct. 19, 1998.
STOPPING THE RUSH: The EMU defense turned in a record-setting performance as the Eagles captured a 14-7 victory against Alabama State, Sept. 10. The Green and White held the Hornets to minus-13 yards rushing in the contest to break the EMU record for fewest rushing yards allowed in a contest. The Eagles sacked two ASU quarterbacks eight times for a total of 61 yards. Eastern edged the previous mark of 18 yards allowed at John Carroll, Oct. 15, 1966.
