COLUMBUS, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — Head Coach Ryan Ray's Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team turned in a successful first weekend of action here Friday-Sunday (Sept. 16-18) at the Muirfield Clay Court Invitational hosted by Ohio State University.
The EMU doubles team of Miriam Westerink (Rheden, The Netherlands-Thomas A Kempis) and Nino Mebuke (Tbilsi, Georgia, Russia) came up with a runner-up finish, winning their first three matches in the tournament before falling to the Akron doubles team of Zara Harutyunyan and Prang Pantusart, 8-5, in their doubles final Sunday afternoon.
The Eagles also had consolation singles wins on Sunday from Marcela Rivero (Santa Cruz, Bolivia-Saint George), and Westerink while the doubles team of Daphne Friedrichs (Hugingen, Germany-Elisa Brandstrom Schule) and Mariya Toncheva (Burgas, Bulgaria-Sport Scholl Vasil Levski) also captured a consolation round win.
“We had a good start to the season,” Ray said of his team's first action of 2011-12. “We got a lot of matches in, had a little success, and can see where to improve. The host families we had for the tournament players were phenomenal. It was a good weekend, and we look forward to competing again in two weeks.”
