Eagles to play Marshall and Oakland, Jan. 14, indoors at Chippewa R.C.

Complete Release.

FIRST COMPETITION OF 2012 SPRING SEASON:  Head Coach Ryan Ray's Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team is scheduled to open the 2012 spring season with a pair of non-conference dual meets Saturday, Jan. 14, indoors at the Chippewa Racket Club in Ypsilanti.
The Eagles are slated to meet Marshall in a 1 p.m. dual and then return to Chippewa for an 8:30 p.m. dual match against Oakland University.
Eastern is coming off a strong fall season that saw the Eagles compete in four competitions as a team and one national event for the No. 1 doubles team of sophomore Nino Mebuke (Tbilisi, Georgia) and senior Miriam Westerink (Rheden, The Netherlands-Thomas A Kempis).
Mebuke and Westerink traveled to Los Angeles, Calif., Oct. 1-2, to compete in the pre-qualifying of the All-American Championships (the first of 3 yearly individual national championships). The EMU duo won its opening-round match, defeating the Georgia Tech team of Lynn Blau/Elizabeth Kilborn, 9-7, Saturday, Oct. 1. The Eagles then dropped an 8-4 decision to the University of Texas team of Krista Damico and Aerial Ellis.

MEBUKE/WESTERINK GAIN NATIONAL RANKING: The No. 1 EMU doubles team of sophomore Nino Mebuke (Tbilisi, Georgia) and senior Miriam Westerink (Rheden, The Netherlands-Thomas A Kempis) is ranked 57th nationally and 7th in the Midwest Region in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) NCAA Division I rankings released in the first week of January.
Mebuke and Westerink have a 5-4 record through the fall season while playing some of the top competition in Division I.  That EMU doubles team finished runnerup at the Muirfield Village Clay Court Invitational, Sept. 16-18, and also went 1-1 in the ITA All-American Pre-Qualifying Meet held Oct. 1-2 at UCLA.

RAY RETURNS FOR A SIXTH CAMPAIGN:  Eastern Michigan University Head Coach Ryan Ray returns for his sixth season as the women's tennis coach. In five seasons, he has directed the Eagles to an overall mark of 39-56 (14-18, MAC).
Assisting Ray for the second straight season will be Graduate Assistant Coach Camila Belassi.
