Women's Tennis Team Shuts Out Oakland University

Eagles record 7-0 win in second dual match of the day
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Head Coach Ryan Ray's Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team closed out out a two-match Saturday, Jan. 14, with a perfect 7-0 win over a visiting Oakland University team here indoors in the Chippewa Racket Club in an evening match.
The Eagles opened action Saturday at 1 p.m. with a 5-2 loss to No. 54 ranked Marshall University here in the Chippewa Racket Club. EMU returned later in the evening for the 7-0 shutout victory over Oakland University in a dual that began at 8:30 p.m.
The Eagles, now 1-1 on the season, won all three doubles matches to take the one doubles point and then followed up with six straight wins in singles.
EMU freshmen Ankita Bhatia (Gurgaon, India-Delhi Public Schools) and Daphne Friedrichs (Hufingen, Germany-Elisa Brandstrom Schule) were the only two Eagles to win both of their singles matches on the day. Bhatia defeated Oakland's Grace Keating, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 3 singles to go 2-0 on the day while Friedrichs upended Oakland's Brittany Baxter, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 5 singles to also post a 2-0 record on the day.
“It takes focus to make it through a double-header,” Ray said of his team's Saturday effort. “We took a close loss this afternoon, and to respond in the second match was important. I think we did a good job of bringing good energy and focus to the late night match.”
