Women's Tennis Falls at Home to 54th Ranked Marshall

Eagles opens 2012 dual-meet season with a 5-2 setback
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — A young Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team came out on the short end of a 5-2 score in a matchup with the No. 54 ranked Marshall University women's squad here Saturday, Jan. 14, in a 1 p.m. dual meet against the 54th ranked Marshall University indoors in the Chippewa Racket Club.
EMU Head Coach Ryan Ray's Eagles' two points in the dual meet came from two of his freshman netters. First-year player Ankita Bhatia (Gurgaon, India-Delhi Public Schools) won her No. 4 singles match over Kia Broomfield, 6-1, 6-0. EMU freshman Daphne Friedrichs (Hufingen, Germany-Elisa Brandstrom Schule) beat Marshall's Karlie Timko, 6-2, 6-3, at No. six singles.
“It was good to see the freshmen step up in their first team matches and get singles wins for us,” Ray said. “Overall, its a bit disappointing we did not bring our best collective performance that we needed to beat a good Marshall team. We will aim for better results every time we step on the court.”
EMU opened the dual by dropping two of three doubles matches to lose the one doubles point that is awarded in a dual meet. EMU's No. 2 doubles team of sophomore Mariya Toncheva (Burgas, Bulgeria-Sport School Vasil Levski) and senior Georgia de'Lisle-Tarr (Adelaide, Australia-Sacred Heart) defeated Marshall's Timko and Ellie Ball, 8-6.
After doubles was completed, the two teams squared off in singles play with Marshall winning four of the six.
Eastern is slated to play another dual meet tonight, at 8:30 p.m. here at The Chippewa Club against Oakland University.
