Eagles Topple Bears in Straight Sets at Robert Morris

The Eagles took their 10th win of the season with a 3-0 win over Morgan State

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. (EMUEagles.com) –
The Eastern Michigan University women's volleyball team up-ended the Morgan State Bears on Friday, Sept. 16 in straight sets at the Robert Morris Holiday Inn Volleyball Classic. The Eagles rode a season-high .396 attack percentage (51-9-106) and took the sets handily with a 25-18 win in the opening frame, 25-5 in the second, and 25-12 in the final set.

EMU improved their record to 10-2 on Friday afternoon with the win over the Bears, while Morgan State fell to 2-9 on the season.

Paige Roback (Maumee, Ohio-Notre Dame Academy) paced the Eastern offense with 11 kills. Roback maintained a .476 attack percentage (11-1-21) in her double-digit performance. Kaitlyn Vincek (South Lyon, Mich.-South Lyon) had a season-high eight kills, while Rachel Iaquaniello (Plymouth, Mich.-Dearborn Divine Child) and Erin Short (Orrville, Ohio-Orrville) had seven kills each. Ashley Mason (Eastlake, Ohio-Lake Catholic) had a double-double with 33 assists and 10 digs for the Eagles, while Haley Stein (Carleton, Mich.-Monroe St. Mary's Catholic Central) picked up a match-high 14 digs.

Eastern used a balanced offensive attack in the opening set to take a quick set lead. Iaquaniello and Roback each had five kills, while junior Kristen Baker (Mentor, Ohio-Mentor) had five kills of her own in the opening frame. Mason had 17 assists in the first set helping EMU to the 25-18 win.

Vincek led the charge in the 25-5 win in the second set for Eastern. She had a perfect 1.000 attack percentage (5-0-5) in the Eagles dominant second frame.  EMU held a .462 attack percentage (14-2-26) throughout the second set and took a two-set lead.

Roback led the Eagles through the final set with six kills in the third frame. Vincek and Short chipped-in with three kills each, while Carolyn Steger (Wexford, Pa.-Pine Richland) had three of her own. Kim Hildreth (Novi, Mich.-Novi) had seven assists in the final set of the match.

Eastern continues their quest to win the 2011 Robert Morris Holiday Inn Volleyball Classic on Saturday, Sept. 17 with a double-dip. The Eagles open the day with Texas-Pan American at 10 a.m., followed by an evening match with the host Colonials of Robert Morris at 5 p.m.
