Women's Tennis Has Strong First-Day Showing

Eagles capture two singles and one doubles match at Muirfield Clay Court Invitational
COLUMBUS, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — Head Coach Ryan Ray's Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team opened its 2011-12 season with a strong showing here Friday, Sept. 16, in the Muirfield Collegiate Tennis Invitational hosted by Ohio State University.
EMU sophomores Mariya Toncheva (Burgas, Bulgaria-Sport Scholl Vasil Levski) and Nino Mebuke (Tbilsi, Georgia, Russia) both won their singles matches while the doubles team of Miriam Westerink (Rheden, The Netherlands-Thomas A Kempis) and Mebuke also won in the first day of action.
“We got some tough first-round competition today,” Ray said of his squad's first action of the season. “I was a bit dissapointed we didn't pull out more wins, but again, we played some stiff competition, and we'll look for more wins as the weekend moves on.”
Toncheva defeated Ohio State's Kelsey Dieters, 3-6, 6-2, 10-4, while Mebuke upended Ball State's lauren Pickrel, 6-0, 6-3, to advance into Saturday's winners bracket. Toncheva will take on Safiyya Ismail (Cincinnati) and Mebuke will square off againsty Zara Harutyunyan (Akron).
In Friday's double action Westerink and Mebuke defeated Ashleigh Witte and Sierra Sullivan of Cincinnati, 8-1, and that EMU duo will take on Dayton's double team of Erin Filbrandt and Olga Shkundina in their next match on Saturday.
