Will serve as a graduate assistant in 2011-12
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Kate Krengel, a graduate student in exercise physiology at Eastern Michigan University, will be a graduate assistant coach with the EMU women's rowing team in 2011-12.
Krengel joins the EMU rowing staff after spending the past 10 years as an engineer at Ford Motor Company. She is pursuing a career change and plans on joining the coaching ranks full time when she completes her graduate work.
"We are very fortunate to have someone of Kate Krengel's background and experience join our staff," EMU Head Rowing Coach Brad Holdren said. "She has been around the program for several years as a volunteer assistant so she is familiar with how we run things. One of her jobs at Ford was recruiting talented engineers into the company so she has a wealth of recruiting experience. With Kate as our recruiting coordinator, we expect our team roster to expand very quickly."
The 31-year-old Krengel has more than 14 years of competitive rowing experience. She started rowing at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) as an undergraduate and has been involved with the sport since that time. She coached rowing at the high school level for five years at the Riverview Community H.S. and she continues to row and race competitively at the Wyandotte Boat Club. Her long-range competition plan is to attempt to earn a spot on the U.S. National
Team.
Krengel earned her bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering at MIT in 2001 and completed her master's degree in mechanical engineering at the University of Michigan in 2004.
A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Krengel graduated from Hathaway Brown School in 1997 after competing in field hockey and track and field as a prep.
