SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's volleyball team was defeated for the first time in nine matches as the Cougars of Brigham Young University topped the Eagles 3-1 (19-25, 23-25, 25-16, 8-25), snapping their eight-match win streak. EMU struggled offensively as they had just a .033 attack percentage (38-33-152).
Eastern fell to 8-2 on the season after the loss to BYU, while the Cougars improved to 8-2 on the year.
Rachel Iaquaniello (Plymouth, Mich.-Dearborn Divine Child) paced the Eagles offense with 13 kills in the loss. Erin Short (Orrville, Ohio-Orrville) chipped-in with eight kills, while Ashley Mason (Eastlake, Ohio-Lake Catholic) had a double-double for EMU with 25 assists and 17 digs.
The Eagles dropped the opening set of the match by a tally of 19-25, Iaquaniello led the offense with four kills in the frame. Christie Carpenter led BYU with five kills in the opening set, helping give the Cougars a 1-0 lead.
Eastern dropped the second set 23-25 to fall behind 2-0. Jennifer Hamson led the Cougars with five kills, while the Eagles had a -.022 attack percentage (11-12-45) in the frame.
EMU was able to regroup and take the third frame from BYU, 25-16. Eastern was able to maintain a .176 attack percentage (10-4-34) in the set, and used 10 total blocks to make the score 2-1.
BYU return-fired in the final set of the match to take down the Eagles, 8-25. Carpenter led the final frame with seven kills for BYU, giving them the final 3-1 edge.
The Eagles finish their trip to Utah with an evening match against the Highlanders of UC-Riverside. First serve is set for 5 pm Mountain time at Crimson Court.
