Eagles look to get into win column against Jags
Complete Release (.pdf)
The Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team (0-1-1) continues its six-game road trip with a stop in Indianapolis, Ind. to face IUPUI Sunday, Aug. 28, at 1 p.m.
OFF TO INDY: The Eagles and Jaguars last did battle Sept. 18, 2009 at Scicluna Field with the visitors coming out on top, 2-1.
However, the Green and White's previous trip to Kuntz Field in 2008 ended more favorably with a 2-1 EMU victory. History is also on the Eagles' side as they own a 6-2-2 all-time series lead with the Jags.
SUNDAY PREVIEW: Several players on Eastern Michigan's squad who have been kept off the scoresheet through two games will be called upon to capture the season's first win Sunday. Senior Chelsea Detrick and sophomore Stephanie Clarke have been held pointless thus far despite firing a combined 13 shots (four on goal).
The Eagles will also rely on continued strong play from sophomore Cara Cutaia, who tallied three points in Friday's draw at Pittsburgh including the tying goal with 10 seconds to play in regulation.
Defensively, senior anchor Julie Kaim will have the task of rallying her unit to better minimize the Jaguars' scoring chances in front of the goal. IUPUI will counter with Megan Hock and Sarah Colby, who claimed First and Second Team All-Summit League honors in 2010, respectively.
Both teams enter Sunday's game searching for some defensive consistency, as each has surrendered six goals apiece in two games.
MIXED BAG: Following a dramatic 2-2 tie in Pittsburgh Friday night, EMU left the University of Detroit saddled with a sour 4-0 setback Tuesday afternoon to open the season at 0-1-1.
Cutaia sent a jubilant Eagles squad into overtime against the Panthers with just seconds remaining in regulation when she sent a looping shot over the Pitt goalkeeper on a feed from freshman Emily Dzik for her first goal of the year. Neither team was able to muster any offense in the two overtime periods, leaving the dueling clubs with a tie to begin the season.
The Titans controlled the tempo in Tuesday's match, scoring a pair of goals in each half. EMU managed just three shots on goal to Detroit's eight.
OVER THE TOP: Cutaia's three-point night Friday against Pittsburgh brought her to within one of her four points in the entire 2010 campaign. The sophomore midfielder notched the game-tying tally and assisted on the game's first goal.
FRESH OUT OF THE BOX: Freshman Angela Vultaggio wasted little time in awe over playing in her first collegiate game. The Eagles' forward started the scoring in 70th minute against Pitt when she received a pass from Cutaia and zipped a 20-yard shot past Pitt goalkeeper Kristina Rioux for the first goal of her young career.
Also registering her first-career point was defender Dzik, who assisted on Cutaia's goal at Pitt. Dzik has started both games in the backfield for Head Coach Scott Hall's team thus far.
MANVILLE RETURNS: Maggie Manville will join the Eagles for the 2011 season to provide some added stability at the goalkeeping position. The senior played from 2007-2009 and sat out the 2010 season.
Manville turned-in some impressive numbers in 2009 while splitting time with Monique Budani. She started 10 games and complied a 5-1-4 record with a sterling 0.54 goals against average and a .909 save percentage. On average, Manville made 10 saves per game and all five of her wins were shutouts.
COME ON BACK NOW: It will be a quick turnaround for the Green and White after they depart Indianapolis following Sunday's matchup with the Jaguars. On Friday, Sept. 2, EMU will head right back down to Indy for a 5 p.m. game against Butler University.
The contest will mark the fourth-straight game away from Ypsilanti in the Eagles' month-long road trip, which still includes stops at Oakland University, Sept. 4, and Western Kentucky University, Sept. 11.
Fans will be rewarded for their patience, however, as the team will play seven of its final 12 games at Scicluna Field including six contests against MAC foes.
IT'S HOW YOU REBOUND: In 2010, the Eagles were 1-4-2 following a loss. The Green and White beat Valparaiso, 3-2, in double overtime, Sept. 10, after falling to Detroit, 1-0, the game prior.
PROMISING BEGINNINGS: Since 2005, the Eagles are a combined 6-4-4 after two games. In 2009, the Green and White got off to a 2-0 start with wins against Eastern Illinois (1-0) and Indiana State (2-1). EMU finished the season at 11-4-6 and earned the No. 2 seed in the Mid-American Conference Tournament.
ON THE RECORD: Detrick currently sits eighth all-time on the EMU scoring list with 45 points, four shy of tying former Eagle stars Brany Jones (1997-2001) and Courtney Sindelar (1999-2002). Jessica Hupe (2000-04) is the all-time leading point-getter with 117.
The native of Grosse Pointe, Mich. is also just a pair of goals away from tying Ashley Rodrigues (21) for fourth all-time in goals with 19. Hupe tallied 49 goals to top the career goals list as well.
