Women's Golf Racks Up Academic All-MAC Accolades

Sarah Johnson, Darby Peters and Robyn Scott earn spots on the 10-person team
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University women's golf team excelled on the course and in the classroom during the 2010-11 campaign. For their efforts, senior Darby Peters (Lake Orion, Mich.-Lake Orion), senior Robyn Scott (Auckland, New Zealand-Westlake Girls-Texas Tech Univ.) and sophomore Sarah Johnson (Wixom, Mich.-Walled Lake Central) were named Academic All-Mid-American Conference, the conference office announced Tuesday, June 14.
Additionally, redshirt freshman Alyssa Kwon (Richmond Hills, Ontario, Canada-Richmond Hills) received an honorable mention selection.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for student-athletes who have excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
Peters, a 2011 second team All-MAC selection, played in 11 tournaments this year, posting an average of 77.1 strokes in 30 rounds. The mark led the team and ranked third in the conference. She finished the season with the 10th lowest single-season average in school-history. Peters finished in the top 10 in four events, including a sixth place finish at the CU Heather Farr Memorial Invitational with a 226 (70-76-80). She also placed seventh at the MAC Fall Preview with a 36-hole total of 156 (76-80) and finished tied for ninth place at the Lumberjack Shootout at Wigwam with a 220 (74-74-72). Ranked 354th according to the Golfweek/Sagarin system, Peters was named the MAC's Golfer of the Week for the period ending March 16.
Scott, the 2011 MAC Sportswoman of the Year, averaged 77.5 strokes per round, good for 12th best in the conference in 2010-11. She finished in the top 10 in three events, including turning in a runner-up showing at the Rio Verde Invitational with a 54-hole total of 222 (72-74-76). She also tied for sixth at the CU Heather Farr Memorial with a 226 (77-73-76) and for fourth place at the Indiana Invitational with a 148 (69-79). Ranked 375th according to the Golfweek/Sagarin system, Scott finished the year with the14th lowest single-season average in school-history.
Johnson, a 2011 first team All-MAC selection, averaged 78.8 strokes per round this season, good for 22nd best in the conference. She recorded four top 15 showings, including an 11th place tie at the UALR Women's Golf Classic with a 225 (70-79-76). Johnson also finished tied for 12th at the Rio Verde Invitational and 13th at the Lumberjack Shootout with a 222 (74-73-75). She also became the the first EMU player to win individual medalist honors at the MAC Championship since the program began prior to the 1996-97 campaign. Johnson finished seven strokes ahead of the rest of the field, and turned in scores of 72-73-71 in the championships. The previous best individual finish by an EMU golfer was a third-place effort by Catherine Fortin (2007), Stephany Fleet (2009) and Robyn Scott (2010).
Kwon, the 2011 MAC Freshman of the Year, averaged 78.7 strokes per round, good for 19th best in the MAC. Ranked 559th according to the Golfweek/Sagarin system, she turned in an eighth place showing at the Indiana Invitational with a 36-hole total of 153 (78-75). She also finished tied for 14th at Lumberjack Shootout at Wigwam with a 223 (75-76-72) and tied for 16th place at the Red Rocks Invitational with a 158 (76-82).
