DEKALB, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field program finished in a fourth-place tie at the 2011 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships as the three-day competition concluded today, May 14, in DeKalb, Ill.
The Eagles tallied a total of 112 points, as the University of Akron won the title with 198.50 points, followed by second-place finisher Kent State University (165.50 points) and third-place Central Michigan University (119 points). The University at Buffalo also had 112 points, while Miami University finished last with 105 points.
EMU relied heavily upon freshmen and sophomores during this title run, as the team graduated members who scored more than 100 points during last year's sweep of the indoor and outdoor championships. This year's team, in contrast, only had two seniors, Clint Allen and Kyle Fortin, register points during this outdoor championship. Freshmen and sophomore athletes accounted for 79 of the team's 100 points scored in non-relay events.
Terefe Ejigu headed the underclassmen brigade as the sophomore captured the highly coveted Most Valuable Performer award for his stellar outing over the three-day meet. Ejigu started out the meet by capturing a first-place finish in the 10,000-meter run. He followed up by winning the 5,000-meter run today with a time of 15:10.29. Additionally, he ran in the 1,500-meter race for the first time all season, and came in third with a time of 3:56.70. Austin Hendrix also competed in the 10k and 5k, finishing second and third, respectively, and acting as an unsung hero picking up 14 points for the squad.
Brycen Spratling, a freshman runner, earned the Championship's Track Most Outstanding Award, as he competed in three races for the Eagles and helped contribute 22 points to EMU's total. Spratling ran the best time in the Mid-American Conference this year in setting a new personal record and the 44th-best time in the nation this season, by running a time of 46.65 in the 400-meter dash. He also anchored both the 4x100-meter relay team which and the 4x400-meter relay team, both of which finished third overall.
In his final collegiate race, Clint Allen also stood out as another valuable performer, something he has done since he first donned the Eagle singlet. Allen won the 100-meter dash in career time as he set a new MAC standard on the year with a finish of 10.34. It was the 33rd-fastest time in the nation this year as well as the fastest time he's run in the event since he posted a time of 10.21 during his freshman campaign. In addition to his stellar 100-meter performance, Allen also placed third in the 200-meter dash with a career-best time of 21.39 and ran the second leg of the third-place finishing 4x100-meter relay squad.
Freshman Chris Scott was the busiest Eagle of the event, participating in the 200-meter dash, the 400-meter dash, the 4x100-meter relay and the 4x400-meter relay, and notching top-five finishes in each event. In the 200-meter dash, Scott placed two spots behind Allen with a fifth-place time of 21.48. His time of 48.60 in the 400-meter dash was good enough for fourth-place. He ran the lead leg for both third-place-finishing relay teams.
In the field, freshman triple jumper Donald Scott placed second overall in just the fourth collegiate jump of his career. His leap of 50-07.25 is a top-50 distance in the nation this year and was just one inch off of tying his personal-best jump.
Pole vaulters Max Babits, freshman, and Joe Tesner, sophomore, placed fourth and sixth clearing heights of 15-11 and 15-05, respectively, while Anthony Bradley (long jump), Cole Sanseverino (1,500-meter run), Jairus Saunders (4x100-meter and 4x400-meter) and Nicholas Petro (steeplechase) also scored for the Eagles.
EMU landed five athletes on the All-MAC squad, as Ejigu, Allen and Spratling earned first-team honors, and Hendrix and Scott were second-team nods.
