Ejigu Wins 10k; EMU Tied for Second After Day One of MACs

DEKALB, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team kicked off the opening day of the Mid-American Conference 2011 Outdoor Championships today, May 12, in Dakalb, Ill. with an outstanding performance in the 10,000-meter race as the squad took the top two spots in helping the Eagles earn 18 points on day one.
Sensation sophomore and reigning MAC Most Valuable Performer Terefe Ejigu ran a time of 32:01.37 in the 10k to take the top overall spot in the race to take the 10 points, while teammate Austin Hendrix would cross the finish line shortly thereafter with a time of 32:04.56, garnering eight points with the finish. With the performance, Ejigu repeated as the 10,000-meter MAC champion. Senior co-captain Matt Hammersmith also competed in the race, finishing 11th with a time of 33:31.72. The race resulted in the Eagles only points on the day out of the three completed scored events.
In the field, another co-captain, Andrew Meyer, recorded two fouls in the hammer throw and finished 13th in the event with a throw of 144-01.
Tim Fuller also competed for EMU as a competitor in the decathalon. Fuller is currently in 11th-place with 3185 points and the 100-meter hurdles remaining to be run.
The Eagles will get day two underway tomorrow, May 13, as the second day kicks off with the shot put and long jump events. The Eagles are also expected to score big in the 110-meter hurdles where sophomore NCAA All-American Vanier Joseph will look to earn his fourth MAC Championship in four opportunities in the hurdle event.
