Ejigu wins 5,000-meter championship run

PHILADELPHIA, Pa./HILLSDALE, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's and women's track teams started their three-day weekend with competition at both the Gina Relays in Hillsdale, Mich. and the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pa. on Thursday evening, April 28, as Tim Fuller competed on the men's side at Gina, and host of athletes competed at the Penn Relays for both the men's and women's side.

Asia Rawls ran well for the Eagles on the opening day as the sophomore sprinter started the day with a 18th-place finish in the 400-meter hurdle championship in a field of 55 runners. Her time of 1:00.55 was a career-best in the event. Samantha Shearer also competed in the event finishing with a time of 1:04.27.

In the women's 4x100-meter relay, the foursome of Rosie White, Ashley Wartley, Ashlee Abraham and ReJeana Marigna placed 16th overall out of 85 teams with a time of 46.05. The group also won their individual heat, beating out the University of Pennsylvania and Indiana University among other schools.

Rawls, along with Dejaa Shearer, Beverly Elcock and Shantavia Williams also had a great run in the 4x400-meter relay, placing 11th in a field of 81 quartets. They had a time of 3:41.42 racing in the fastest overall heat with Texas A&M and Florida taking the top two spots in the heat.

The 5,000-meter run had two EMU runners as Courtney Calka and Rachel Quaintance finished the race in 21st and 22nd place with times of 17:18.38 and 17:46.76, respectively. Morgan Churchwell was the only Eagle to compete in the 3,000-meter championship run as she finished with a time of 9:58.61.

In the field, Jessica Hemingway also continued to post stellar marks in the pole vault as she placed fourth with a height of 13-7.25. Only two better heights were cleared on the day.

On the men's side, it was Terefe Ejigu, the reigning Mid-American Conference champion, who outshined a field of 36 elite athletes to take first place in the 5,000-meter championship run. The second-year runner posted a time of exactly 14:00.00, barely edging out Eastern Kentucky's Soufiane Bouchikhi who ran a 14:00.52. The time was Ejigu's career-best, shaving close to 20 seconds off of his previous best of 14:19.62 from one year ago at Ohio State's Jesse Owens Classic. Additionally, the time was the fifth-best in school history.

In the 10,000-meter, Austin Hendrix competed for EMU, running a time of 31:37.05.

At the Gina Relays, Tim Fuller currently sits in fifth-place finish in the decathlon after five events. His best finish was a fourth-place shot put toss. The freshman will compete in the 110-meter hurdles, the discus throw, the pole vault, javelin throw and the 1,500-meter run tomorrow to wrap up the event.

Athletes for the men and women will be back in action at the Penn Relays and at the Gina Relays on Friday and Saturday, April 29-30.
