NASHPORT, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University women's golf team inched their way closer to the top spot in the race for the 2011 Mid-American Conference Women's Golf Championship Saturday, April 23, with a 13-over 301 to move into sole possession of second place with a 617 (316-301) following the second round at the par 72, 6,073 yard Longaberger Golf Club.

The Eagles sits five strokes back of leader Kent State University (612) and will need a solid team effort on Sunday in order to unseat the defending conference champions. EMU entered the day tied with Western Michigan University in third place behind KSU and Ball State University, but today the Eagles were 15 strokes better than the Cardinals and Broncos, who now sit in third and fourth place, respectively. Akron (634), Toledo (641), Ohio (641), Northern Illinois (669) and Bowling Green (671) complete the team standings.

Sophomore Sarah Johnson (Wixom, Mich.-Walled Lake Central) continued her strangle-hold on top spot on the individual leader board, firing a 73 for a two-day total of 145 (72-73). The Wixom, Mich. native looks to become EMU's first individual champion as she holds a six stroke lead over WMU's Britney Hamilton and KSU's Shamira Marshall, who are at seven-over 151.

All five Eagles are ranked in the top 40 including senior Darby Peters (Lake Orion, Mich.-Lake Orion) who carded a round of 74 to reside in fourth place with a 36-hole total of 152 (78-74).
