Sarah Johnson Becomes EMU's First Individual MAC Champion

NASHPORT, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) -- Eastern Michigan University sophomore Sarah Johnson (Wixom, Mich.-Walled Lake Central) claimed the Mid-American Conference Women's Golf Individual Championship following the final round at the 2011 MAC Championship Sunday, April 24, at the par 72, 6,073 yard Longaberger Golf Club.
Finishing at even-par 216 for the tournament, including a one-under par effort in the final round, Johnson becomes the first EMU player to win individual medalist honors since the program began prior to the 1996-97 campaign. Johnson finished seven strokes ahead of the rest of the field, and turned in scores of 72-73-71 in the championships. The previous best individual finish by an EMU golfer was a third-place effort by Catherine Fortin (2007), Stephany Fleet (2009) and Robyn Scott (2010).
As a team, the Green and White equaled the school's best finish with a runner-up showing with a three-day total of 928 (316-301-311). Kent State University rolled to its 13th consecutive championship with a 54-hole total of 916 (305-307-304).
EMU's second-place finish equaled the mark set by the 2003, 2007, 2008 and the 2009 squads. In 2003, the Green and White recorded a 925 at Walden Ponds Golf Course in Hamilton, Ohio. The 2007 team posted a 1,252 at Longaberger Golf Club in Nashport, Ohio, while the 2008 Eagles finished as the runner-up with 1,228 at The Brickyard Crossing Golf Course in Indianapolis, Ind. The 2009 squad totaled a 1,256 which also took place at at Longaberger Golf Club.
The Eagles' five runner-up finishes at the MAC Championship are tied with Ohio (1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2005) for the most of any team in the league. Western Michigan (2004), Toledo (2006) and Ball State (2010) as the only other teams to record a second place finish in the history of the tournament.
All five Eagles are ranked in the top 40 including senior Darby Peters (Lake Orion, Mich.-Lake Orion) who carded a final round of 80 to place in eighth place with a 54-hole total of 232 (78-74-80). Senior Robyn Scott (Auckland, New Zealand-Westlake Girls-Texas Tech Univ.) tied for 15th with a 235 (80-78-78). Redshirt freshman Alyssa Kwon (Richmond Hills, Ontario, Canada-Richmond Hills) notched an 82 for a 25th place at 244 (86-76-82) and freshman Usanee Laopattananont (Bangplee, Thailand-Thai Christian School) finished in a 38th place tie with a 255 (86-85-84).
Kent State shot 36-over par through the first 36 holes and followed that up by turning in a 16-over par performance in the final round. Ball Stat was third with a 939 followed by Akron and Western Michigan in a for fourth with a 943. Toledo (956), Ohio (960), Northern Illinois (999) and Bowling Green (1,006) rounded out the team scores.
Head Coach Sandy Wagner and the rest of the Eagles will now await word from the NCAA on a possible at large berth into the upcoming NCAA Regional Championships, May 5-7.
