Johnson Surges Atop the Leaderboard at the MAC Championships

As a team, Eastern Michigan is tied with Western Michigan for third place

NASHPORT, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) -- Eastern Michigan University sophomore Sarah Johnson (Wixom, Mich.-Walled Lake Central) fired a 72 in the first round to surge into the lead at the 2011 Mid-American Conference Women's Golf Championship. As a team, the Eagles are tied with Western Michigan University for third place after 18 holes of play on the par 72, 6,073 yard Longaberger Golf Club, compiling a team score of 316 in the nine team field.
Johnson opened her round on fire with birdies on No. 2 and No. 9, but followed that with bogeys on No. 4 and No. 8. She then was even the next nine holes with a birdies on No. 11 and No. 14 before closing out with a bogey on No. 13 and No. 17.
Kent State's Martina Gavier and Shamira Marshall are three strokes behind Johnson at three-over 75.
The field battled off and on rain and temperatures in the mid-40s all day on a course already saturated due to rain earlier in the week.
The Golden Flashes hold a seven-stroke lead heading into day two, that total includes holding down four of the tournament's top 10 slots. Ball State is in second place with a score of 312, followed by EMU (316), WMU (316), Akron (319), Toledo (321), Ohio (325), Northern Illinois (337) and Bowling Green (341).
All five Eagles are ranked in the top 36 including senior Darby Peters (Lake Orion, Mich.-Lake Orion) who carded a round of 78 to reside in a tie for 10th place. Senior Robyn Scott (Auckland, New Zealand-Westlake Girls-Texas Tech Univ.) is in 19th with an 80. Redshirt freshman Alyssa Kwon (Richmond Hills, Ontario, Canada-Richmond Hills) and freshman Usanee Laopattananont (Bangplee, Thailand-Thai Christian School) notched rounds of 86 for a 36th place tie.
The second round of the 2011 MAC Women's Golf Championship will get underway at 7:40 a.m. Saturday, April 23, with the final round scheduled for Sunday, April 24, at 8 a.m. For live scoring, visit http://www.golfstat.com.
