Lengthy match ends with Eagles on losing end
KALAMZAOO, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- In a very lengthy match dubbed "The Compass Match" because of the team's geographical names, the Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team was unable to outlast the Western Michigan University squad, falling 5-2 on the road in Kalamazoo, Mich., Saturday, April 16.
WMU jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after taking the doubles point and winning singles No. 6 and No. 2, but the Eagles would not go down easily. Miriam Westerink and Marcela Rivero would get points on the board for EMU with wins in the No. 1 and No. 5 slots, both notching two-set wins.
From that point, Western would retake control of the match and wrap it up with a long, back-and-forth No. 4 singles match, as Jill Pastunink came back to defeat Mariya Toncheva in three sets, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.
"This was a great battle that almost lasted four and a half hours," said EMU Head Coach Ryan Ray. "It was very difficult to come out on the losing end of this one and Friday's match against Bowling Green as well. In both matches we got outplayed in the end by the home teams. We will finish up the regular season on Friday at home against Toledo playing for the fifth seed in the tournament."
The match against Toledo will be at 1 p.m. on April 22, at the Chippewa Racquet Club in Ypsilanti, Mich.
