Rockets earn the 5-2 win
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University womens' tennis team dropped its regular season finale at home, 5-2, to the University of Toledo Rockets Friday afternoon, April 22, at the Chippewa Racquet Club in Ypsilanti, Mich.
With the loss, the Eagles end their season with a 10-12 overall record and a 3-5 mark in Mid-American Conference play. The loss locks Eastern into the No. 6 seed heading into next weekend's MAC Championships, hosted by EMU at Ypsilanti High School and the Chippewa Racquet Club. Toledo, meanwhile, finished the season at 13-9 overall (4-4 MAC) and a No. 5 seed.
In the match, the duo of Miriam Westerink and Nino Mebuke were able to win the No. 1 doubles match by a score of 8-4 over the visiting Rockets, but would ultimately lose the doubles points after 8-0 and 8-3 losses in the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles positions, respectively.
Singles play would not shake out any differently for the Green and White as the team would only earn two victories. Mebuke once again earned a win on the day as she defeated UT's Kelsey Anonsen after losing the first set, 3-6, by taking the final two sets, 6-0 and 6-2 from the No. 2 slot.
Xu Chang, who is the lone senior on the squad, won the final regular-season singles match of her career by taking the No. 3 point with a decisive 6-2, 6-2 win.
"Toledo fought harder to win today," said EMU Head Coach Ryan Ray. "That was the difference in the match. We did not finish strong these last two weekends and that is disappointing. We will get back to work Monday and get ready for Western Michigan on Friday."
The MAC Championship will kick off in Ypsilanti on Thursday, April 28. The Eagles will play in the No. 3 vs. No. 6 game as the lower seed against the Western Michigan Broncos.
