EMU is held to just two hits in today's, 6-0 loss to Miami
Box Score.
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University softball team suffered a 6-0 setback to Mid-American Conference opponent Miami this afternoon, April 16, at Varsity Field to drop to 21-10 overall (7-4 MAC).
Miami moves to 18-17 overall and improves to 3-6 in MAC play.
The Eagles offense was held to just two hits in the loss, with Sarah Gerber (North Canton, Ohio-Hoover) and Allison Scherer (Stow, Ohio-Stow-Munroe) representing the Green and White's offensive production this afternoon.
Jenna Ignowski (Niles, Mich.-Niles) is charged with loss and drops to 12-4 on the year. The sophomore went 1.1 innings before being relieved by Lauren Wells (Lowell, Ind.-Lowell) in the second inning. Wells took over and notched 5.2 innings in the circle, striking out five while holding the RedHawks to just two hits and one earned run.
Miami just used a six-run rally in the top of the second to pull away with the teams' first of two meetings this weekend.
MU's Jordan McElroy led off the frame with her first collegiate home run beyond the right center field fence, giving the RedHawks an early 1-0 lead.
A walk and two hits later, Miami jumped to a two-run lead that was soon increased to three on a Kirstie Fehrenback single to push the score to 3-0.
Wells was called in from the bullpen to take over pitching duties, but the RedHawks managed to connect on their second home run of the inning, plating three to take a six run lead over the Eagles.
In the bottom of the second, Gerber singled through the left side to give the EMU offense its first hit of the day, but would later be caught stealing at second base.
Scherer replaced Courtney Nicholson (Navarre, Ohio-Central Canton Catholic) in the same frame and recorded the Eagles' second hit of the contest on an infield single to the shortstop, but Miami managed to escape the inning before EMU could strike.
From there, EMU's offense struggled to get runners on base and did not register a hit through the remaining five innings of play.
EMU will look to avenge today's setback tomorrow afternoon for the second of two against the RedHawks at Varsity Field. First pitch is set for a 1 p.m. start.
