Men's Swimming and Diving Puts Eight on Academic All-MAC

The Eagles land four on the Academic All-MAC list, while four are named honorable mention

CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) —The Mid-American Conference announced its 2010-11 Women's Swimming and Diving Academic All-MAC team today, April 12, as voted on by faculty athletic representatives at MAC institutions. A total of 27 student-athletes were named to the team, including eight members of the Eastern Michigan University men's swimming and diving team.

Justin Griggs (Cheltenham, Australia-Australian Catholic University), Ricky Linder (Cypress, Texas-Cypress Woods), Gilles Renard (Huy, Belgium-Athenee Royal de Huy), and Andrew Saunders (Halifax, Nova Scotia-Halifax West) were named to the Academic All-MAC squad, while Connor Christie (Saline, Mich.-Saline), Jeffrey Craig (Kent, Ohio-Field), Jake Heyblom (Grand Haven, Mich.-Grand Haven), and Dave Stefl (Farmington Hills, Mich.-Harrison) earned honorable mention.

Griggs, a 4.0 psychology major, was named second team All-MAC after runner up finishes in both the 100 freestyle and 100 butterfly at the MAC Championships. He posted the fourth best times in the conference in the 100 backstroke (50.13) and 100 freestyle (45.29) at the EMU Invitational on Dec. 4. Griggs also finished first place in two events against Miami in both the 50 free (21.30) and 100 fly (51.00) to help the Eagles win their 59th consecutive MAC dual-meet.

Linder, a 3.93 finance major, holds the third best time in the Mid-American Conference for the 1000 freestyle when he completed the event in 9:39.42 against Miami. The sophomore placed ninth in the 1650 free in 16:05.76 at the 2011 Championships. Won the 1000 freestyle three times throughout the 2010-11 season, including first place finishes against Ball State, Xavier, and Miami.

Renard, a 3.90 physics research major, holds the tenth fastest time in the conference in the 500 freestyle event with his 4:40.53 effort at the EMU Invitational. At the 2011 MAC Championships, Renard took seventh in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:35.87. The junior earned second place in the 1000 freestyle in EMU's wins over both Ball State and Buffalo.

Saunders, a 3.90 finance major, earned All-MAC second team honors after placing third (306.30) on the one meter boards and fourth (344.70) on the three meter at the 2011 MAC Swimming and Diving Championships. Saunders placed first in both the one and three meter boards against Michigan on Jan. 15. The sophomore holds NCAA Zone consideration marks of 333.90 in the one meter event and 346.60 on the three meter, representing the fifth and seventh best scores in the MAC, respectively.

Christie, a 3.66 exercise science major, placed sixth in the 100 breaststroke at the 2011 MAC Swimming and Diving Championships in 56.92. The senior recorded the seventh fastest time in the conference in the 100 breast (57.63) and the 200 breast (2:04.95) at the EMU Invite.

Craig maintains a 3.21 grade point average. A second team All-MAC selection, the sophomore took second at the 2011 MAC Championships after surpassing a pool record mark of 398.55 points on the three meter boards. The sophomore took first in the three-meter dive four times throughout the 2010-11 campaign, including a top finish of 392.85 points at the EMU Invitational on Dec. 4 to set a new Jones Natatorium record in the event.

Heyblom, a 3.66 finance major, was named to the All-MAC first team after being crowned champion in the 100 breaststroke event at the 2011 MAC Championships, completing the distance in 56.13. The junior also took fourth at the championships in the 200 breaststroke in 2:02.21. Heyblom posted the ninth best time in the conference in the 200 breast (2:07.61) and the eighth fastest time in the 100 breast (57.70).

Stefl, a 3.43 special education major took third in both the 1000 (10:08.10) and 500 (4:54.07) freestyle events in the Eagles victory over Ball State. Against Michigan, the senior posted a fourth place time of 4:54.03 in the 500 freestyle. Stefl also took eighth in the 1650 free at the MAC Championships with a time of 16:05.12 in the event.

The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50% of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
