Box Score
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (EMUEagles.com) – A potent offense and the right arm of Brian Valente (Macomb, Mich.-Eisenhower-Saginaw Valley State) led the Eastern Michigan University baseball team to a, 13-1, rout in seven innings against Alabama A&M University in a non-conference affair at Raymond C. Hand Stadium on the campus of Austin Peay State University, Sunday, March 6.
Valente had his best start of the season as he went six strong innings and allowed just a run on three hits while striking out five and walking just one. Meanwhile, the top of the Eagle batting order, which included Ken Battiston (West Milton, Ohio-Milton Union), Brent Ohrman (Adrian, Mich.-Adrian) and Daniel Russell (Grandville, Mich.-Grandville), went a combined 7-for-12 at the plate with seven RBI and two runs scored to lead the offense.
The Eagles improve to 7-5 on the season after winning their sixth game in their last seven tries. The Bulldogs fall to 1-8 with the loss.
The EMU bats came out in full force by putting up 13 runs on 13 hits and scored in every inning after a scoreless first.
The Eagles' four-run second inning came by way of a two-out rally. After loading the bases, Kyle Peterson (Chandler, Ariz.-Hamilton-Chandler-Gilbert CC) walked to bring in the first run of the game and then Battiston singled to left to bring home Robert Wendzicki (Brook Park, Ohio-Midpark) and Tucker Rubino (Scottsdale, Ariz.-Horizon-Glendale CC). Ohrman then followed with a single to right to make it 4-0 after two.
Up 6-1 in the fifth, the Eagles tacked on four more thanks to run-scoring singles by Rubino and Kyle Klein and a fielding miscue by the Bulldogs that ballooned the EMU lead to 10-1.
The Eagles would add three more runs in the sixth when Battiston drove in two with a double to left and Ohrman another with an RBI single to right.
Battiston went 2-for-5 with four RBI on the day while Ohrman finished 3-for-4 with a run and two RBI. Other Eagles to tally multi-hit days were Russell (2-for-3), Zack Leonard (Canton, Mich.-McKinley) (2-for-3) and Rubino (2-for-2).
EMU will return home for a few days before heading to Lawrence, Kan. to take on the Kansas Jayhawks in a three-game series March 11-13. Last year, the Eagles split a doubleheader with the then 25th-ranked Jayhawks in a series that was moved to the Metrodome in Minneapolis.
