Eagles and Jayhawks Set for Three-Game Series in Lawrence

The EMU baseball team will head to Lawrence, Kan. for a three-game series this weekend.

-- The Eastern Michigan University baseball team will take on the Kansas Jayhawks in a three-game series in Lawrence, Kan. this weekend, March 11-13. The Eagles have won six of their last seven contests and split a doubleheader with the then-25th-ranked Jayhawks to open the season a year ago. Friday's first pitch is slated for 3 p.m. central time.

THE SERIES: Eastern Michigan and Kansas will meet for the second straight season after splitting a doubleheader at the Metrodome in Minneapolis a year ago. The Jayhawks lead the all-time series 4-2 and are 3-1 against the Eagles in games held in Lawrence.

EAGLE RECAP: The Eagles claimed victories in four out of five games at the Riverview Inn Classic in Clarksville, Tenn. in the team's most recent action and has now won six of their last seven overall. EMU swept Presbyterian College in a pair of mid-week games, outscoring the Blue Hose, 19-10, in the series. 
    The Eagles then split a doubleheader with Austin Peay, taking a thrilling, 16-15, win in 11 innings in game one before falling 10-5 to the Governors in game two. The team wrapped up its road trip with Alabama A&M. After being rained out in game one March 5, the sun came out for the team's finale the next day, and EMU took a 13-1 win in seven innings back home with them.
    The Eagles hit .353 on the road trip and Zack Leonard led the offense by hitting .529 (9-for-17) with four doubles and two RBI. Three others including Rob Wendzicki, Brent Ohrman and Ken Battiston hit over .400 during the road trip.

ON THE HORIZON: Following its three-game series with the Kansas Jayhawks, EMU is scheduled for its home opener March18 against Alma College at 2 p.m. in the first game of the inaugural Oestrike Classic at the venerable Oestrike Stadium, celebrating its 40th anniversary. The Eagles will also take on Oakland University three times throughout the weekend.

SCOUTING THE JAYHAWKS: Kansas enters its series with the Eagles boasting a 6-6 mark through 12 games and are currently winners of its last two after defeating Air Force and North Dakota in its previous two outings. As a team, the Jayhawks are hitting .198 and averaging 2.9 runs per game. They are led offensively by Jake Marasco who is hitting .390 (16-for-41) on the season with four doubles, a triple and two RBI.
    On the mound, the Jayhawks have a 2.99 ERA. Thomas Taylor is 2-0 with a 1.80 ERA in three appearances (two starts) spanning over 15 innings.

HITTING ON ALL CYLINDERS: Senior Zack Leonard, who hit .529 (9-for-17) last week, upped his season average to an even .400 (18-for-45). His 18 hits on the year give him 246 for his career, third on the all-time list behind Derrick Peterson (274) and Brian Bixler (258) in EMU history. Leonard started the year 10th, but has climbed to sixth in the nation among active career hits leaders. Indiana's Jarrod Sabourin leads all active players with 276 hits over his career.

HEAT CHECK: Brent Ohrman is hitting a team-high .469 (15-for-32) over his last seven games with five doubles, a triple and 13 RBI. During that span, the junior has a seven-game hitting streak with five multi-hit games including three three-hit performances. The team is 6-1 during Ohrman's streak.

HIT PARADE: The Eagles hit .353 (61-for-173) in their last five-game road trip. The 18 hits recorded in their game one, 16-15, victory over Austin Peay was a season-best and the most since May 9, 2010 when the Eagles also sprayed 18 hits in a 13-11 win over Northern Illinois.
