Box Score
LAWRENCE, Kan. (EMUEagles.com) – Holding onto a slim 3-2 lead heading into the bottom of the eighth inning, the Kansas Jayhawks put up a five-spot to seal an 8-2 victory over the visiting Eastern Michigan University baseball team in the first game of a three-game set at Hoglund Ballpark, Friday, March 11.
The Eagles (7-6) kept the game close with solid pitching by senior left-hander Robert Wendzicki (Brook Park, Ohio-Midpark) who went six innings and allowed three runs (2 earned) on 12 hits while striking out three. Kansas (7-6), which entered the series with a team batting average of .198, slugged out 14 hits against EMU pitching en route to its third straight victory.
The Jayhawks scored an unearned run in the first to take an early lead. Jason Brunansky doubled to lead off the frame and eventually scored on an Eagle miscue with two outs that would have ended the inning.
The Eagles got the run back in their half of the third when freshman Lee Longo (Mayfield, Ohio-Mayfield) singled to left to score Ken Battiston (West Milton, Ohio-Milton Union) from second base, tying the game at 1-1.
Kansas would retake the lead in the fourth on a Kaiana Eldredge single to left center, scoring Alex DeLeon from third with two outs in the inning.
Jake Marasco homered to lead off the sixth and gave the Jayhawks a 3-1 advantage. Wendzicki (0-2) would finish out the inning before being replaced by senior right-hander Tim Combs (Dayton, Ohio-Wayne).
In the seventh, EMU got a leadoff homerun of its own off the bat of Kyle Peterson (Chandler, Ariz.-Hamilton-Chandler-Gilbert CC), who blasted his second long ball of the season to left field, cutting the deficit to 3-2. Kansas starter, T.J. Walz would strikeout the next two hitters before his day came to an end.
Walz (2-2) went six and two-thirds innings and allowed both runs on six hits and struck out a season-high 10 batters while walking just one en route to his second win of the season.
With the game still in doubt going into the bottom of the eighth inning, the Jayhawks sent 11 players to plate and posted five runs to break open an 8-2 lead, which is how the game ended.
The biggest blow came off the bat of Brunansky, who doubled home a pair to make the score 6-2. He finished the game 2-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. Brunansky was one-of-five players to record multiple hits in the game for the Jayhawks.
Conversely, the Eagles had just one player record a multi-hit game with Daniel Russell (Grandville, Mich.-Grandville) posting a 2-for-3 effort.
The Eagles will try to pull even with the Jayhawks in game two of the series when the teams meet for a 1 p.m. central time start Saturday, March 12. EMU right-hander Steve Weber (North Royalton, Ohio-North Royalton) will take the hill against Kansas left-hander Wally Marciel.
