Box Score
LAWRENCE, Kan. (EMUEagles.com) – Sophomore hurler Steve Weber (North Royalton, Ohio-North Royalton) kept the Kansas offense at bay and received plenty of run support as the Eastern Michigan University baseball team evened the series with an 8-1 victory over the Jayhawks at Hoglund Ballpark, Saturday, March 12.
The right-hander Weber (2-0) went seven scoreless innings and scattered just three hits while striking out two and walking four en route to his second win of the season. Kansas starter Wally Marciel (2-2) lasted just 3 1/3 innings after allowing six runs on 11 hits.
The Eagles improve to 8-6 with the win while the Jayhawks fall to 7-7 with the loss.
The EMU offense, which tallied eight runs on 13 hits, was able to spot Weber three first inning runs on back-to-back RBI singles by Lee Longo (Mayfield, Ohio-Mayfield) and Zack Leonard (Canton, Mich.-McKinley). Longo and Leonard each finished the day with two hits and two RBI to help pace the offensive attack for the Eagles.
Meanwhile, the Kansas offense, which tallied season-highs with eight runs and 14 hits in game one of the series, was stagnant as Weber allowed just two Jayhawks to reach as far as second base in his seven innings of work.
The lone KU run came in the eighth with the Eagles already leading 8-0. Jake Marasco recorded an RBI single off EMU reliever Kristian Calibuso (Brandon, Fla.-Armwood-Florida State College at Jacksonville), who got one inning of work in. Kyle Peterson (Chandler, Ariz.-Hamilton-Chandler-Gilbert CC) threw a scoreless ninth inning to close out the win for the Eagles.
EMU played long ball in the fourth inning when Kyle Peterson blasted his third homerun of the season. Robert Wendzicki (Brook Park, Ohio-Midpark) led off the frame with a double to left center before Peterson came up and deposited one over the wall in left.
In the same inning, Ken Battiston (West Milton, Ohio-Milton Union) got into the act, taking Marciel deep for a solo shot and his first homerun of the season.
The Eagles added two more in the sixth thanks to a Daniel Russell (Grandville, Mich.-Grandville) RBI double, another Longo run-scoring single and a couple of Kansas miscues to make the score 8-0 at the time.
The Eagles will go for the series win tomorrow, March 13, as they take on the Jayhawks in a 1 p.m. start at Hoglund Ballpark in the rubber match of the three-game set.
