Box Score
LAWRENCE, Kan. (EMUEagles.com) – Senior right-hander Corey Chaffins (New London, Ohio-New London) showed that he has the Jayhawks' number by defeating them for the second straight time in as many seasons and leading the Eastern Michigan University baseball team to a, 10-4, victory in the rubber match of a three-game series at Hoglund Ballpark, Sunday, March 13.
Chaffins (3-0) beat then-25th-ranked Kansas in the 2010 season opener, 3-1, and defeated them again in his first start of the 2011 season on Sunday. He went eight innings and allowing just two runs on 10 hits while striking out seven and walking none. The New London, Ohio native retired the leadoff batter six times and induced three inning-ending double plays, two of which he started, en route to the win over a Jayhawks squad that defeated top-ranked TCU earlier this year.
The EMU offense was on top of its game as well by raking 14 hits, the majority coming from the top of the order in Ken Battiston (West Milton, Ohio-Milton Union), Brent Ohrman (Adrian, Mich.-Adrian) and Daniel Russell (Grandville, Mich.-Grandville), who combined to go 11-for-14 with six RBI and six runs scored. Ohrman and Russell each tallied their second career four-hit games in the contest and are now tied for the team lead in hits with 24. Battiston recorded his second three-hit game of the season.
The Eagles (9-6) fell behind early when the Jayhawks tallied four hits on their way to two first inning runs capped off with an RBI single by Jake Marasco. Russell displayed a strong arm and limited the damage by gunning down Marasco at home plate after Brandon Macias singled to left for the final out of the inning.
The EMU bats then came to life in the top half of the second inning to the tune of four runs on four hits and aided by one of four Jayhawk miscues on the day which allowed all runs to cross the plate unearned in the frame. Battiston took advantage by homering for the second time in as many days as he took a pitch over the right field wall.
Chaffins then went on to throw seven scoreless innings to finish out his day. He retired the next three Jayhawks in order via ground outs in the second and his defense continued to have his back with inning-ending double plays to conclude the third, fourth and sixth innings. In the eighth, Chaffins still featured his best stuff as he struck out to KU hitters en route to a perfect frame.
The Eagles tacked on two in the sixth and two in the eighth to take a commanding 9-2 lead in the contest. Senior Zack Leonard (Canton, Ohio-McKinley) contributed with a sixth inning RBI single and finished the day 2-for-5 with a run scored.
In the eighth, Battiston led off with a single to right followed by an Ohrman double to right, putting runners on second and third. Russell then stroked a single up the middle to drive in both runners to give the Eagles a seven-run lead.
Kansas (7-8) scored two runs in the ninth off EMU reliever Joe Batistelli (Allen Park, Mich.-Allen Park), to make the final score 10-4.
The Eagles have now won eight of their last 10 games and will head back to Ypsilanti in anticipation of the March 18 home opener against Alma and Oakland in the first two games of the inaugural Oestrike Classic, which will take place at Oestrike Stadium March 18-20.
