CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team ran its winning streak to a season-high five games with a 16-15 extra-inning win in game one before dropping game two of the doubleheader, 10-5, to Austin Peay State University at Raymond C. Hand Park in Clarksville, Tenn.
The Eagles adjust their record to 6-5 overall with the split while APSU moves to 5-3 as a result.
Five-run innings proved to be the difference in each game. In game one, the Eagles scored five runs in the 10th inning to defeat a Governors squad, 16-15, which only managed four in their last half inning. In game two, a five-run sixth for APSU proved to be the difference in a 10-5 decision.
EMU set season-highs in hits (18) and runs (16) and every starter in the lineup contributed with at least one hit in the win. It was led by Brent Ohrman (Adrian, Mich.-Adrian) and Robert Wendzicki (Brook Park, Ohio-Midpark), who each finished with three hits apiece in the game and four for the day. Ohrman added a run scored and five RBI while Wendzicki tallied a run and three RBI.
Wendzicki, who also started game one on the mound, got through the first four innings with ease. He surrendered just a run through the first four frames and then ran into a lower third of the order that suddenly awakened to spurn a five-run fifth inning rally against the Green and White.
Prior to that APSU fifth inning, the Eagles had built a 7-1 lead, scoring a run in each the second and third innings before tacking on five in the fourth and fifth innings combined. EMU used a key double from Lee Longo (Mayfield, Ohio-Mayfield) to lead off the second inning and Ken Battiston (West Milton, Ohio-Milton Union) drove him home two batters later to give the Eagles their first lead of the game.
Tucker Rubino (Scottsdale, Ariz.-Horizon-Glendale CC) added a two-run triple in the fourth to push the Eagle lead to 4-1 and would eventually score to make it 5-1.
Leading 10-8, Ohrman gave EMU a much-needed an insurance run by driving home Matt Hitt (Fishers, Ind.-Fishers-Kishwaukee College), who led off the inning with a walk, to make it 11-8. However, APSU's C Hudson pulled the game even for the first time with a three-run homerun off EMU reliever Corey Chaffins (New London, Ohio-New London) to tie the game.
After a scoreless ninth inning by both sides, the Eagles came up in the 10th and put up a five-spot capped off by a two-run single by Wendzicki to give them all they thought they would need in a 16-11 lead. But ASPU wasn't done. It would make one final push, scoring four runs to pull within one before Chaffins got Hudson to pop out to end the game.
In game two, the Eagles fell behind early and struggled to get any offense going against APSU starter Zach Toney, who went five of the seven innings and allowed just an earned run on two hits. Five errors by the EMU defense didn't help matters as just two of the Governors' 10 runs were earned.
Much like game one, Hudson took it upon himself to get the offense going, blasting a leadoff homerun to start the APSU first inning. The Governors would add three more runs in the third thanks to a pair of Eagle defensive miscues.
Just after EMU began to get their offense going with single tallies in the fifth and sixth innings, APSU once against takes advantage of mistakes by the defense to pour it on with five unearned runs in the sixth to make it 10-2.
The Eagles would score three in the seventh to pull within five, but it was too little, too late for the Green and White.
With three hits on the day, Zack Leonard (Canton, Ohio-McKinley) raised his batting average to a team-high .381 on the season. He also leads the Eagles with 16 hits and 12 runs scored. Longo tallied three hits on the day to extend his hitting streak to five games, tied with Ohrman and Wendzicki for longest current hitting streaks on the team.
The Eagles will be back in action tomorrow and Sunday to do battle with Alabama A&M for the first time in the program's history. Saturday's first pitch is slated for 1 p.m. central time with Sunday's start time slated for noon.
