MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team split its doubleheader with the West Virginia University Mountaineers, Tuesday, March 22, falling 20-6 in game one before taking game two, 9-7, at Hawley Field.

The Eagles put a six-spot on the board to take a commanding first inning lead in game one, but the Mountaineers came back with 20 unanswered runs to win the front end of the doubleheader. EMU then bounced back in game two by scoring two runs in the second, two in the third and four in the fourth on its way to a two-run victory.

With the split, the Eagles move to 12-8 on the season while the Mountaineers' record adjusts to 14-9.
In game one, the EMU offense ripped the Mountaineers for six early runs on three hits, all coming in the first inning and highlighted by a three-run homerun by junior Kyle Peterson (Chandler, Ariz.-Hamilton-Chandler-Gilbert CC), his third long ball of the season. Peterson finished 2-for-3 in the contest with a double.

After that, though, it was all West Virginia. The Mountaineer offense got three runs back in their half of the first to cut the deficit in half. They then took the lead with a six-run third inning and added to it with a five-run fifth.

Meanwhile, WVU starter Marshall Thompson really settled down after the first inning by sitting down six of the next seven hitters and surrendering just two more hits en route to his third victory of the season.

EMU starter Steve Weber (North Royalton, Ohio-North Royalton) lasted just two and a third innings and allowed six runs (5 earned) on five hits. Taking the loss was Neil Butara (Euclid, Ohio-St. Ignatius), who came in relief of Weber in the third inning and allowed nine runs on nine hits to fall to 0-1 on the year.

Seven Mountaineers reached multi-hit games with Kevin Griffin leading the team with a 4-for-5 effort with three RBI and two runs scored.

In game two, the Eagles were able to erase the memories in game one by rediscovering their offense to the tune of nine runs on 11 hits. Sophomore Daniel Russell (Grandville, Mich.-Grandville) led the offensive attack with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate, including a double, a triple, two runs scored and three RBI.

With EMU leading 4-3 in the fourth inning, Russell singled home senior Aaron Chavez (Milpitas, Calif.-Milpitas-Ohlone) to make it 5-3 and later scored to make the score 7-3. The Eagles would add four runs total in the frame to take an 8-3 advantage.

The Mountaineers clawed back with a run in each of the final four innings and threatened to erase the deficit in the bottom of the seventh by loading the bases with two outs, but Peterson, who doubles as a hard-throwing reliever came in to shut the door by getting Brady Wilson to fly out to end the game. Collin Taylor (Cincinnati, Ohio-Lakota West) picked up his first win of the season with three and two-thirds innings in relief.

EMU will return home to host the University at Buffalo in its Mid-American Conference home opener this Friday-Sunday, March 25-27. Friday's contest is slated for 6 p.m. followed by 1 p.m. starts in the final two games of the series.
