Viltz earns two first place finishes to lead EMU

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)- The Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team fell to Western Michigan, 191.675-190.550, Friday, Feb. 4, at University Arena in Kalamazoo. The meet honored all men and women who have and continue to serve our country as part of Military Appreciation Day.
With the loss the Eagles drop to 1-5 (1-2 MAC) while the Broncos improve to 4-4 (2-0 Mac).
Despite beating the Broncos as a team on the vault posting a 48.375 over WMU's 48.275, the Eagles were unable to capitalize on the other three events falling, 47.800-47.250 on the bars, 47.200-46.800 on the beam and 48.400-48.125 on the floor exercise .
In true fashion senior Nikole Viltz (Hawthorn Woods, Ill.- Carmel) led the Green and White finishing first on both the vault and balance beam recording a 9.850 and 9.700 respectively. Viltz also finished tied for fourth on the floor exercise posting a 9.650.
Junior Stacie Wood (Brantford, Ont.- Brantford Collegiate Institute) had a strong showing finishing tied for second on the floor exercise earning a 9.675 and fifth on the uneven parallel bars posting a 9.575.
Sophomore Kristina Kurkmilis (Eagleville, Pa.- Methacton) recorded a 9.725 on the vault just above freshman Ashley Quinton (Calgary, AB Canada- Bishop Menally) who posted a 9.700, earning them fourth and fifth place finishes respectively. Quinton also recorded a 9.300 on the uneven parallel bars.
Senior Grace Crouch (Bellbrook, Ohio- Bellbrook) and freshman Shawna Ciaramella (Hamilton. Ont.-St. Mary CSS) finished tied for fourth on the balance beam earning a 9.500. Ciaramella matched that with another fourth place tie with Viltz on the floor exercise recording a 9.650.
The Eagles are back at home for a Mid-American Conference tilt Saturday, Feb.12, taking on Bowling Green State University followed by a non-conference match versus Air Force Academy Saturday, Feb. 19. Both meets will take place in Bowen Field House and are slated to begin at 1 p.m.
