YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)
– A raucous crowd roared in amazement after a 25-foot heave from Eastern Michigan University sophomore guard Derek Thompson (Detroit, Mich.-Melvindale-SEMO) went through the basket as the buzzer ended in regulation.

The same crowd was sent home with heads hung low, however, after more than a minute of deliberation from the officials it was determined that the clock read all zeroes before the ball left Thompson's hand, leaving the Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team on the losing end of a 58-56 scoreboard, against the Miami University RedHawks here Saturday, Feb. 5, at the Convocation Center in a Mid-American Conference cross-divisional game.

After trailing by double-digits throughout most of the contest, the RedHawks made a furious comeback in the waning moments, as freshman forward Jon Harris nailed four three-point baskets and Allen Roberts connected on an and-one opportunity to give Miami its first lead of the game, 58-56, with just 1.2 ticks left on the clock.

Eastern had one chance remaining. Brandon Bowdry (St. Louis, Mo.-Taylor (Mich.) Truman) threw a perfect inbound pass to Jamell Harris (Euclid, Ohio-Euclid) who handed the ball off to Thompson between two Miami defenders. Thompson would launch the leaning 25-footer between the same two Miami defenders and the shot hit nothing but the bottom of the net, only for the referees to rule it after the final buzzer had sounded.

The Eagles had two opportunities to increase its fading lead late in the contest as they had the ball with a one-point lead and just over 30 seconds left, but failed to convert, giving the RedHawks another opportunity to take the lead. They did just that as Harris downed the last of his four threes with 1.2 seconds left on the clock.

EMU was led by senior forward Bowdry who got his 35th-career double-double by notching 19 points and grabbing 11 boards. J.R. Sims (Fort Wayne, Ind.-Snider) poured in a career-high 13 points and Thompson scored eight. With the loss, the Eagles drop to 6-16 (3-7 MAC) and the RedHawks improve to 11-12 (6-3 MAC).

The Eagles started the game with a hot hand, connecting on their first five shot attempts, while limiting the RedHawks to just one make in their first seven tries from the field.

After back-to-back three pointers from senior wing Jay Higgins (Fayetteville, N.C.-IMG Academy-Hillsborough C.C.), and two baskets by starting point guard Simms, including a long bomb, EMU saw its lead hit 11 points, 15-4, just four minutes into the ballgame.

Darrell Lampley (Linden, N.J.-Linden-Lakeland C.C.) added another three-pointer for the home team after the visitors found their mark with back-to-back treys from Orlando Williams and Allen Roberts, making the game 20-12.

The Green and White would reel off five more points and once again buckle down defensively, holding Miami without a score for more than seven minutes until Roberts nailed another triple try to trim the Eagles' lead to 25-12. Bowdry added a free throw and Sims netted a mid-range jumper with less than five seconds remaining in the first half, and EMU headed into halftime with a 28-15 advantage.

For the half, Miami shot just 5-of-27 from the field (18.5 percent) while Eastern shot 9-of-19 (47.4 percent). Roberts scored 12 of Miami's 15 first half points, while Bowdry and Sims each scored seven for EMU. Higgins had six and Thompson had five points in just five minutes of action after being whistled for two early fouls in the opening minutes.

In the second half, Bowdry went to work early, netting eight points on a layup, old-fashioned three-pointer and another score from beyond the arc. His baskets put the Eagles up by 16 points, 36-20, before the starting backcourt of Simms and Thompson nailed two more triples to extend the Eagle's lead to 20, 43-23.

Miami continued to chip away at the lead, closing the gap to nine points after a barrage of three pointers and a 21-9 run made the score 52-43. EMU was only able to score four points for the rest of the contest before Miami closed the game with the five three-point plays for the 58-56 win.

Eastern Michigan will be back in action next Wednesday, Feb. 9, as the Eagles travel to Ohio to play the Kent State Golden Flashes.
