KENT, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – Despite starting the game with a 10-2 run, the Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team was unable to sustain its early momentum, falling 80-70 to Kent State University, Wednesday, Feb. 9, here at the M.A.C. Center.
After going into halftime down by six, 40-34, EMU allowed the Golden Flashes to break the game open at the start of the second half, holding the Eagles scoreless for the first 4:38 of the final stanza while netting nine points of their own. At the end of the run, KSU was on top by 15, 49-34, with just over 15 minutes left.
The Eagles continued to chip away, scoring four points in a five second span to cut the lead to nine, 57-48, and cutting the lead to single-digits on four different occasions. However, Eastern was unable to get closer to than within nine points the rest of the way as KSU came away with the win.
Brandon Bowdry (St. Louis, Mo.-Taylor (Mich.) Truman) led the Eagles with 25 points and six rebounds, while Antonio Green (Inkster, Mich.-Robichaud) netted nine points, and Jay Higgins (Fayetteville, NC-IMG Academy Hillsborough (Fla.) C.C.) tallied seven points. Kenny Stewart (Williamsport, Pa.-Notre Dame PrepWeatherford (Texas) C.C.) and Darrell Lampley (Linden, N.J.-Linden-Lakeland C.C.) also chipped in with six points apiece.
Kent State had four players in double figures as Justin Greene led the way with 23 points (19 in the first) and eight boards. Michael Porrini had 15, while Carlton Guyton and Randal Holt scored 13 and 11, respectively.
The Eagles were able to jump out to an early 10-2 advantage in the first two and a half minutes of the game as Bowdry connected on two layups and a three-pointer, and Higgins also hit a long bomb on the Eagles' next possession.
Rodiriguez Sherman stopped EMU's run with a fast-break layup that cut the Eagles' lead to six, 10-4. The teams would split the next 10 points, putting Eastern up 15-9, but Kent answered with three straight baskets, including a long two-pointer from Eric Gaines, to knot the scores at 15 apiece.
The Golden Flashes were able to take their first lead of the contest with just over six minutes remaining in the first half, going up 24-22, but Bowdry would bring the game back to even, 24-24, after a low post spinning lay in.
The home team would mount a 12-6 run, including back-to-back baskets by Mark Henniger, to extend their lead to six, 36-30, with three minutes left in the half, ultimately taking a 40-34 lead into intermission.
Bowdry led the Eagles with 16 points in the first half, while Higgins, Derek Thompson (Detroit, Mich.-Melvindale-SEMO) and Lampley each scored five points. Each team shot well for the half, as EMU was 14-of-35 from the field (40 percent) while KSU shot 50 percent (17-of-34).
For the game, EMU shot 38 percent (26-of-58) from the floor, while KSU was 30-of-60 for 50 percent. The Eagles won the turnover battle as they only had 11 while forcing 18.
The Eagles will be on the hardwood again, Saturday, Feb. 12, as the team honors the 1990-91 Sweet 16 team in a home matchup against the University at Buffalo.
