EMU HITS THE ROAD FOR BATTLE WITH KENT STATE: The Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team heads to Kent, Ohio, Wednesday, Feb. 9, for a 7 p.m. battle with Mid-American Conference cross-divisional foe Kent State University. The game is slated to be played in the Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center (M.A.C.). EMU enters the game with a 6-16 overall record and a 3-6 MAC mark. The Eagles are currently tied for third in the West Division. Kent State enters the game leading the East Division with a 6-2 league record and a 15-7 overall mark.

EMU VS. KENT: Kent State leads the series with Eastern, 36-30. The Golden Flashes have won the last 14 in a row, including a 75-68 win over the Eagles last year, Feb. 4, 2010, in Ypsilanti. The last EMU win was a 79-74 decision, Feb. 7, 1998, in Kent, Ohio.

HEADING HOME: EMU sophomore center Jamell Harris is a native of Euclid, Ohio, near Cleveland and about an hour from the Kent State campus. Harris has played all 22 games this year, starting 12 times. He is averaging 4.0 points, 4.2 rebounds and 2.3 blocks.

LAST-SECOND HEARTBREAK: The Eagles found one of the most heartbreaking ways to lose a game when EMU hosted Miami last Saturday, Feb. 5. Trailing by two points, 58-56, with just 1.2 seconds left, the Eagles ran a length of the court out-of-bounds play that ended up with sophomore guard Derek Thompson (Detroit, Mich.-Melvindale-SEMO) making an off-balance three at the buzzer for what looked like the winning basket. The officials ruled the shot good on the court, but when they checked the instant replay they said the clock read 0.0 when the ball was still in Thompson's hands, nullifying the basket and giving Miami the 58-56 win.

BOWDRY EARNS THIRD MAC WEEKLY AWARD OF THE SEASON: Eastern Michigan University senior forward Brandon Bowdry (St. Louis, Mo.-Taylor (Mich.) Truman) has been named the Mid-American Conference men's basketball West Division Player of the Week for Feb. 7, 2011. The honor is Bowdry's third this season and the eighth weekly award in his outstanding four-year EMU career. He earned the award after turning in the 34th and 35th double-doubles of his career in two games played last week.
Wednesday, Feb. 2, at home against Akron, Bowdry scored 25 points with 12 rebounds to lead the Eagles to a 60-56 win. He connected on 9-of-15 field-goal attempts, 1-of-3 three-point shots and 6-of-7 free throws in the victory.
Saturday, Feb. 5, Bowdry scored 19 points with 11 rebounds, hitting 5-of-13 field-goal attempts and 8-of-11 free throws in a heartbreaking 58-56 loss to Miami at home in the Convocation Center.

FIRST DOUBLE-FIGURE GAME: Redshirt freshman guard J.R. Sims (Ft. Wayne, Ind.-Snider) turned in the first double-figure scoring game of his brief career with 13 points in a loss to Miami, Feb. 5, 2011. Sims, who was getting his third straight start in that Miami contest, hit 5-of-7 field-goal attempts, 2-of-3 triples and 1-of-2 free throws while grabbing three rebounds. His previous best scoring game was a nine-point effort at Bowling Green, Jan. 29, 2011.

BLOCK PARTY: EMU 's Jamell Harris (Euclid, Ohio-Euclid) is just a sophomore, but the 6-foot-9 forward has advanced all the way to the seventh spot in school history for blocked shots with 72. He has 50 blocks this season which is the 5th-best single-season effort in the EMU record books. Harris has played in 53 games for the Eagles, earning 14 starts.

FIRST EAST WIN: The Eagles turned in their first win in Mid-American Conference cross-divisional play this season with a 60-56 victory over a visiting Akron team, Feb. 2, in the Convocation Center. The EMU schedule is set up for the first five games to be played against West Division teams, the next six against East Division foes, and the final five back in the West. EMU dropped the first two cross-divisional games on the road, falling at Ohio, Jan. 26, and at Bowling Green, Jan. 29. Miami is here in the Convocation Center, Feb. 5, followed by a road trip to Kent, Feb. 9, and a home game against Buffalo, Feb. 12, to finish out the games against East Division teams.

The Gamecocks, from Jacksonville, Ala., are currently 4-18 overall and 2-9 in Ohio Valley Conference play.
