FORT MYERS, Fla. (EMUEagles.com)
— Despite a career best outing from sophomore pitcher Jenna Ignowski (Niles, Mich.-Niles), the Eastern Michigan University softball team dropped a 10-inning heartbreaker to Albany this evening, Feb. 25, at the Moe's Blue and Green Invitational hosted by Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers, Fla.

Despite the loss, Ignowski was solid in the circle, fanning 12 while only giving up two runs and five hits through 35 batters faced in 9.1 innings of work. Her 12 strikeouts ties her for third all-time in EMU single-game records and has not been accomplished since the 2002 season.

Offensively, Sarah Gerber (North Canton, Ohio-Hoover) was 3-for-5 at the plate and scored twice, while fellow junior McKenna Russ (North Canton, Ohio-Hoover) registered two hits and knocked in a run for EMU.

The Eagles fell to a rough start as they gave up three runs in the bottom of the first after walking three and hitting two Albany batters. Ignowski came out of the bullpen and closed out the inning by striking out her first of 12 victims at the plate.

EMU threatened to score in the top of the third inning with a runner on third base and one out, but the Great Danes were able to hold the Green and White by retiring the next two batters.

A solo homerun by Albany's Gina Mason in the third inning increased the Great Dane lead to four, but the Eagles would chip away as the bats came alive in the sixth. Gerber started the late rally with a double to left field and advanced to third on a fielder's choice. Russ connected on a gapper to left-center allowing Gerber to come around and score. EMU plated another run off of a Lauren Delapaz (Plymouth, Mich.-Canton) RBI-double, locking the score at 4-2.

Gerber again would ignite the Eagles offensive attack in the seventh with a single to third base. With runners at first and second, Nellie Coquillard (Niles, Mich.-Niles) saved her lone hit of the evening for some late-inning heroics by blasting a two-run double to knot the game at four apiece. After shutting down Albany in the bottom of the seventh, both teams were forced to enter extra innings.

After nearly three hours of action, the game finally came to a close in the bottom of the 10th. Albany's Jessica Bergin managed to put the ball through the left side for a walk-off, one-run single to steal the victory.

The Eagles will get back on track as they continue play in the Moe's Blue and Green Invitational tomorrow afternoon against Iowa. The game is scheduled for an 11:15 a.m. start.
