Eagles Remain in Fourth Heading into Final Day at Championships

—The Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving team earned two medals as the Eagles ended the day in fourth place at the 2011 Mid-American Conference Swimming and Diving Championships this evening, Feb. 25 in Athens, Ohio.

In the evening's first event, Briana Emig (Sewickley, Pa.-Ambridge) recorded a personal best time of 4:15.93 in the 400 IM for a second place finish for the Eagles. Jacquelyn Swartz (Centerville, Ohio-Centerville) also scored for the Green and White with her 4:28.00, 15th-place finish. Miami's Kelsey Vehr won the event in record-setting fashion, setting a new MAC meet record time of 4:14.61.

In the 100 butterfly, Elisa Torres (Antioch, Calif.-Deer Valley) helped add to the Green and White's score after touching the wall in 56.59 for a 16th-place finish.

Sarah Kowalski added the second runner-up finish after completing the 200 freestyle in 1:48.21. Not only is the time a Division I-B consideration mark, but it is also a career best time in the event for the senior.

The 100 breaststroke featured a seventh place time from Chelsea Allard (Walnut Creek, Calif.-Lake Forest (Ill.)), who swam the distance in a season best, 1:03.44.

Three Eagles tallied points in the 100 backstroke. Amanda Kiefer (Piqua, Ohio-Lehman Catholic) took fourth in 54.90, while Sarah Maraskine (Midland, Mich.-Dow) notched a 56.24, 10th-place finish and Helena Tolic (Zagreb, Croatia-Sportska Gimnazija) took 13th in 56.77 for the Green and White.

On the three-meter boards, Christina Nunez-Wood (Denver, Colo.-Bear Creek) was the lone diver in the consolation final for the Eagles. She tallied 237.55 points landing her in 11th-place.

In the final event of the evening, the 400 medley relay crew of Kiefer, Allard, Swartz, and Kowalski combined for a sixth place, 3:45.85 finish.

EMU will return to action tomorrow for the final day of competition. The afternoon session features prelims for the 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, and the 200 butterfly. Finals for these events are set to take place later that evening and will be followed by the three-meter diving final and 400 freestyle relay.
