Eagles Look to Corral the Broncos Sunday

EMU OUT TO AVENGE EARLIER SETBACK TO WMU IN SUNDAY OUTING: The Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team will be out to avenge an early-season loss at Western Michigan University when the Eagles host the Broncos Sunday, Feb. 27, in a 2 p.m. game in the Convocation Center. Western won the earlier meeting, 65-48, Jan. 16, 2011, in Kalamazoo. EMU enters Sunday's game with a 9-18 overall record and a 4-9 MAC mark. Western is 16-11 overall and 8-5 in the MAC, tied with Ball State for the lead in the West Division.
BOYKINS TO BE HONORED SUNDAY: One of the greatest players in Eastern Michigan University men's basketball history will have his jersey retired Sunday, Feb. 27. Guard Earl Boykins, a four-year letterman for the Eagles from 1994-98, and an honorable mention All-American as a senior, will be the fourth EMU basketball player to have his jersey raised to the rafters. Boykins' No. 11 jersey will join former men's greats George Gervin, Grant Long and Kennedy McIntosh along with women's standout Laurie Byrd as the only basketball players to have their jerseys retired. Boykins will be honored at halftime of Sunday's EMU-WMU game, set for a 2:07 p.m. start.
HONORING ONE OF THE GREATS: Former Eastern Michigan University great Earl Boykins will be the fourth men's basketball player to be honored by having his jersey retired when he is honored at halftime of Sunday's, Feb. 27, 2011, EMU-Western Michigan University men's basketball game. Boykins joins men's basketball greats George Gervin, Grant Long and Kennedy McIntosh with a jersey retired in the rafters along with EMU women's standout Laurie Byrd. Boykins was a standout point guard for the Eagles from 1994-98 and completed his career as the second-leading scorer in school history (2,211 points), the all-time assists leader (624) and the fifth-leading three-point scorer (181). He started 121 of the 122 games in played during his career. He was named the Most Valuable Player in the 1998 Mid-American Conference Post-Season Tournament on the way to honorable mention All-American honors that same year.
During his EMU career, Boykins would help lead EMU to the NIT as a freshman, the NCAA Tournament in 1995-96 when the Eagles upset Duke in the first round, and the NCAA Tournament in 1998 when the Eagles fell to Michigan State. Eastern won the MAC title in 1995-96 and the MAC Tournament Championship in 1997-98. He would also play on the United States men's basketball team that won the Gold Medal at the 1997 World University Games in Italy.
After graduation, Boykins would go on to play professional basketball, in the NBA and Europe and is currently playing for the Milwaukee Bucks in the NBA.
CLIMBING UP THE RECORD BOOK: EMU senior forward Brandon Bowdry (St. Louis, Mo.-Taylor (Mich.) Truman) has moved into the top four in both EMU career scoring and rebounding. After the first 26 games of the 2010-11 season Bowdry has scored 1,782 career points to rank fourth and his 971 rebounds is good for the second spot, behind all-time leader Kennedy McIntosh who had 1,426 rebounds from 1967-71. In addition, Bowdry has scored in double figures 90 times and has scored 20 or more points 28 times. He has played in 122 games for the Eagles, earning 114 starts in his four-year career.
FIGHTING FOR POSITION: The Eagles are down to their last three games of the regular season and are fighting to improve their position in the final standings. Eastern is currently fourth in the West Division of the Mid-American Conference. If the season ended today, the Eagles would find themselves as the No. 10 seeded team and they would travel to play the No. 7 seeded team Tuesday, March 8. The top four teams in the regular season earn a bye in the first round and advance, along with the top four seeds, to Cleveland's Quicken Loans Arena for the quarterfinals, semifinals and finals, March 10-11-12.
BOWDRY EARNS THIRD MAC WEEKLY AWARD OF THE SEASON: Eastern Michigan University senior forward Brandon Bowdry (St. Louis, Mo.-Taylor (Mich.) Truman) was named the Mid-American Conference men's basketball West Division Player of the Week for Feb. 7, 2011. The honor was Bowdry's third this season and the eighth weekly award in his outstanding four-year EMU career. He earned the award after turning in the 34th and 35th double-doubles of his career in two games played last week.
At home against Akron, Feb. 2, Bowdry scored 25 points with 12 rebounds to lead the Eagles to a 60-56 win. He connected on 9-of-15 field-goal attempts, 1-of-3 three-point shots and 6-of-7 free throws in the victory.
Saturday, Feb. 5, Bowdry scored 19 points with 11 rebounds, hitting 5-of-13 field-goal attempts and 8-of-11 free throws in a heartbreaking 58-56 loss to Miami at home in the Convocation Center.
