EMU OUT TO AVENGE EARLIER SETBACK TO BALL STATE: The Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team gets back into Mid-American Conference West Division play Wednesday, Feb. 23, at Ball State University in Worthen Arena in Muncie, Ind. The Eagles are coming off a heart-stopping 63-60 win over Jacksonville State University in a Sears BracketBuster Game Saturday, Feb. 19. The Eagles, now 8-18 overall and 4-8 in league play, will be out to avenge an earlier 60-51 loss to Ball State, Jan. 19, in Ypsilanti. Ball State will enter Wednesday's game with a 15-10 overall record and a 7-5 MAC mark.
THIS TIME IT COUNTED: EMU sophomore guard Derek Thompson (Detroit, Mich.-Melvindale-SEMO) looked like he hit a winning three-point field goal at the buzzer earlier this year against Miami, Jan. 19. After a lengthy instant replay review that goal was ruled to have been taken after the final horn had sounded, ending in a 58-56 EMU setback. This time around, Saturday, Feb. 19, Thompson broke a 60-all tie with a three-point field goal with just 2.8 seconds left against Jacksonville State, Feb. 19, for the 63-60 Eagles' victory.
BRACKETBUSTER TIME: Saturday's, Feb. 19, EMU-Jacksonville State University BracketBuster by Sears game was the Eagles' eighth appearance in the in-season matchups pitting potential NCAA Tournament hopefuls against each other. As part of the agreement, all 11 of the BracketBusters home teams in televised games, as well as the remaining 46 home squads, will play a “return” game at the home facility of their opponent in November or December of the 2011-12 season.
HELP FROM THE BENCH: The Eagles received plenty of fire-power from the bench in two of their last three games. Five EMU players came off the pine to score 26 points and grab 18 rebounds, Feb. 9, at Kent State. In the Buffalo contest, Feb. 12, the Eagles played seven off the bench and that group accounted for 28 points and eight rebounds to help the Eagles post a 78-65 victory.
TWO EAST WINS: The Eagles managed to close out their six-game swing against Mid-American Conference East Division teams with a 2-4 record and it was close to being 3-3. The Eagles beat Akron, 60-56, Feb. 2, and Buffalo, 78-65, Feb. 12. The Eagles had losses to East foes Ohio, 79-65, Jan. 26, Bowling Green, 68-63, Jan. 29, Miami, 58-56, Feb. 5, and Kent State, 80-70, Feb. 9. The EMU schedule is set up annually for the first five games to be played against West Division teams, the next six against East Division foes, and the final five back in the West.
BOWDRY EARNS THIRD MAC WEEKLY AWARD OF THE SEASON: Eastern Michigan University senior forward Brandon Bowdry (St. Louis, Mo.-Taylor (Mich.) Truman) has been named the Mid-American Conference men's basketball West Division Player of the Week for Feb. 7, 2011. The honor is Bowdry's third this season and the eighth weekly award in his outstanding four-year EMU career. He earned the award after turning in the 34th and 35th double-doubles of his career in two games played last week.
Wednesday, Feb. 2, at home against Akron, Bowdry scored 25 points with 12 rebounds to lead the Eagles to a 60-56 win. He connected on 9-of-15 field-goal attempts, 1-of-3 three-point shots and 6-of-7 free throws in the victory.
Saturday, Feb. 5, Bowdry scored 19 points with 11 rebounds, hitting 5-of-13 field-goal attempts and 8-of-11 free throws in a heartbreaking 58-56 loss to Miami at home in the Convocation Center.
