Gymnastics Victorious on Senior Day Against Air Force

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)- The Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team finished on top Saturday afternoon, Feb. 19, at Bowen Field House claiming its second consecutive victory by out-performing the Air Force Academy, 191.500-188.175. Prior to the meet EMU honored its four seniors Grace Crouch, Jessica Perdoch, Heather Qualls and Nikole Viltz for senior day.
With the win the Eagles jump to 3-5 (2-2 MAC), while the Falcons fall 1-9 overall.
Senior Nikole Viltz (Hawthorn Woods, Ill.-Carmel) led the Eagles in the win, finishing first on the vault recording a career best 9.875 and tied for first on the balance beam posting a 9.550. Viltz also earned a 9.200 for her performance on the floor exercise.
Freshman Ashley Quinton (Calgary, Canada-Bishop Menally) followed right behind Viltz, posting a 9.700 finishing second on the vault. Quinton tied for first on the uneven parallel bars with junior Stacie Wood (Brantford, Ont.-Brantford Collegiate Inst.) earning a 9.675 and tied for third with fellow freshman Shawna Ciaramella (Hamilton, Ont.-St. Mary CSS) on the balance beam with a 9.525.
Sophomore Kristina Kurkmilis (Eagleville, Pa.-Methacton) recorded a career best 9.625 on the vault earning her a third place finish. Senior Jessica Perdoch (Reading, Pa.-Exeter Township) and junior Kristen Yourick (Albuquerque, N.M.-La Cueva) had a strong showing posting a 9.575 and finishing tied for third place. Yourick helped solidify the win with a first place finish on the floor exercise posting a season high 9.750 while also recording a 9.000 on the balance beam and 9.575 on the bars. Yourick was the only Eagle to compete in the all-around where she compiled a 37.900 over AF's Brittany Dutton and Linnaea Hance.
Junior Sabrina Thomas (Roswell, Ga.-Eaton Academy) and freshman Miranda Jarvis (Westminster, Md.-Westminster) recorded a strong 9.600 on the floor exercise to earn them a tie for third place.
The Eagles head to Mt. Pleasant, Mich. to take on the Chippewas of Central Michigan University Friday, Feb. 24. The first event is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. at McGuirk Arena. The Eagles will then travel to Colorado to meet back up with the Falcons, March 3 and 5 at Cadet Gym.
