Nick Whitenburg earns lone victory for Eastern Michigan on Thursday
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team ran into a loaded 15th-ranked Central Michigan squad and, as a result, was dealt a 29-3 setback in Mid-American Conference action at McGuirk Arena, Thursday, Feb. 17.
Nick Whitenburg tallied the lone win for the Eagles, who fell to 11-10 overall, 0-4 in the MAC. Meanwhile, the Chippewas improve to 7-8 (3-1 MAC).
Freshman Jared Germaine nearly got the Eagles off to a promising start as he tied his match with Christian Cullinan, 3-3, late in the third period with a reversal. However, before the final horn sounded, Cullinan earned a one point escape to take the match, 4-3.
At 133, CMU's Scotti Sentes showed everyone why he is ranked 11th-nationally and EMU's Filiberto Colon was on the down side of that. Sentes built a 5-0 lead after one period and an 11-2 margin after two before going on to take the match, 17-6, giving CMU a 7-0 lead after two matches.
EMU freshman Seth Schaner took on Scott Mattingly at 141 and fought through a scoreless opening period. Mattingly created some separation in the second period, scoring a reversal after choosing down to go up 2-0. He would add to it in the third period and go on to win by a 5-1 score.
At 149, Mike LeHolm got the call for EMU and struggled to get anything going against Donnie Corby. Corby scored a first period takedown and added to it with a second period escape to go up, 3-0. An escape by LeHolm made it 3-1 late in the third, but Corby waited him out and received another point for riding time to make the final tally, 4-1, and give CMU a considerable, 13-0, lead.
At 157, EMU's Aaron Sulzer and CMU's Ryan Cubberly gave the fans a very evenly contested match as it went to a tiebreaker after a 1-1 match couldn't be decided in an extra sudden victory period. In the tiebreaker, Ryan Cubberly started out on the bottom first and quickly earned an escape point. When it was Sulzer's time on the bottom, he wasn't able to reciprocate as Ryan Cubberly rode him out to decide a 2-1 victory.
EMU senior Nick Hendrick found himself in yet another close match as he took on CMU's Eric Cubberly, the brother of Ryan, at 165. After a scoreless first period, Eric Cubberly earned an escape to take a slim, 1-0, edge heading into the final period. In the third, Hendrick quickly earned an escape to knot the match at 1-1, but then Eric Cubberly scored a takedown followed by another Hendrick escape to make the score, 3-2. A riding time point for Eric Cubberly made the final score, 4-2.
Entering the match with a 3-0 record in MAC action, EMU's Chris Eggert looked to get the Eagles on track with their first win, but seventh-ranked Ben Bennett had other ideas in their match at 174. Bennett clung to a 3-0 lead after two periods and then somehow broke the match wide open, scoring three nearfalls in the third period to go away with a 13-0 victory and give Central an insurmountable, 23-0, team score lead.
CMU's Craig Kelliher had similar success at 184, riding out EMU's Khodor Hoballah to a gritty, 3-0, victory. At 197, Nick Whitenburg gave the Eagle faithful something to cheer for as his tight match with Chad Friend wasn't decided until the very end. With the match tied at 5-5, Whitenburg scored a late third period takedown to take a commanding, 7-5, lead that he would not relinquish, going on to win by a final of 7-6.
Wes Schroeder got the call for EMU at heavyweight and he had the daunting task of taking on second-ranked Jarod Trice of CMU. Schroeder held his own despite the end result, a 2-0 victory for Trice, managed by a single escape and riding time.
The Eagles will have a couple days off before heading to Athens, Ohio for the regular season finale against the Ohio Bobcats. Action is slated to begin at 2 p.m.
