Colon, Sulzer and Hendrick post victories for the Eagles

ATHENS, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team won three of its first five matches, but wound up dropping its Mid-American Conference regular season finale to the Bobcats of Ohio University, 28-9, at the Ohio Convocation Center, Sunday, Feb. 20.

With the win, Ohio improves to 9-6 overall, 4-1 in the MAC and clinches a share of the conference title with Central Michigan and Kent State. Meanwhile, the Eagles fall to an even 11-11 overall (0-5 MAC).

The match started at 133 pounds and things looked up for the Eagles as junior Filiberto Colon (Belleville, N.J.-Belleville Senior-Rider) upended Jacob Wojcik, 5-4.

Colon took a 4-0 lead into the third period before Wojcik came all the way back to tie it up with a takedown and a two-point nearfall with 1:36 remaining in the match. Colon escaped out of it and that one point proved the difference as he won his first MAC match of the season.

At 141, 20th-ranked Germane Lindsey of Ohio never wavered, turning in a 16-8 major decision win. EMU's Seth Schaner (Big Rapids, Mich.-Big Rapids) managed seven of his eight points from escapes while Lindsey recorded six takedowns and a two-point nearfall on his way to victory.

Ohio made it two wins in a row as Bradley Squire posted an 8-3 victory over EMU's Corey Phillips () at 149. Squire controlled the whole way as he added 3:24 of riding time to cap it off.

At 157, the Eagles got back on the board with Aaron Sulzer (Cleveland, Ohio-Holy Name) taking home a 5-3 win in sudden victory over Chris Kline. Sulzer, down 2-0 heading into the third period, scored an escape point followed by a takedown to take a brief 3-2 edge. However, Kline's 1:35 of riding time earned him an additional point and enabled him to tie the score to send it to overtime.

In the overtime, it took Sulzer just 19 seconds to record a takedown and the win, bringing EMU closer in the team score by making it 7-6, Ohio.

EMU's Nick Hendrick (Columbiaville, Mich.-Powers Catholic) then gave the Eagles the lead with a hard-fought, 7-4, win over Ohio's Steve Wilson. The senior took a 4-2 lead into the final period, but was nearly caught on his back, only to give Wilson a two-point nearfall to tie the score. Shortly after, Hendrick responded by escaping out and then earned a takedown to provide the final margin of victory and give EMU a 9-7 team lead.

Momentum would quickly shift in favor of Ohio as 16th-ranked Nick Purdue outlasted Chris Eggert (Dundee, Mich.-Dundee) of EMU, 2-0. After a scoreless first period, Purdue earned an escape in the second and added a riding time point after accumulating 1:38 on top en route to the win.

With Ohio leading, 10-9, Ryan Garringer provided some much-needed insurance for the Bobcats by recording a fall of Khodor Hoballah (Dearborn, Mich.-Dearborn) in just 32 seconds at 184 to make the score, 16-9, with three matches remaining.

At 197, EMU's Nick Whitenburg (Temperance, Mich.-Bedford) nearly knocked of 16th-ranked Erik Schuth, but the Ohio senior edged out the 8-7 victory thanks to 2:36 of riding time.

Two top-20 wrestlers matched up at heavyweight with Ohio's Jeremy Johnson getting the best of EMU's David Wade (Beavercreek, Ohio-Beavercreek), 2-0. Johnson used an escape point in the second period and one riding time point to outlast Wade and secure the team victory and a share of the conference title for Ohio.

A forfeit by Jared Germaine (Saginaw, Mich.-Saginaw Valley) at 125 gave Gabe Ramos the win for Ohio to close out the match.

The Eagles will have off until the MAC Championships get underway March 5-6, in DeKalb, Ill. Wade, who placed second at the 2010 MAC Championships, will vie for a second straight NCAA qualification. Check back at EMUEagles.com for more information regarding the 2011 MAC Championships.
