Eagles Complete Day One of Competition at MAC Championships

Aaron Sulzer at 157 and Seth Schaner at 141 will compete for third place on Sunday.

DEKALB, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team completed day one of the 2011 Mid-American Conference Championships in sixth place and behind leader Central Michigan after all ten wrestlers moved on to day two of competition at the NIU Convocation Center in DeKalb, Ill. Saturday, March 5.
Freshman Seth Schaner (Big Rapids, Mich.-Big Rapids) at 141 and sophomore Aaron Sulzer (Cleveland, Ohio-Holy Name) at 157 will have the opportunity to claim third place in their respective weight classes after pulling off upsets on day one.
Schaner and Sulzer advanced as far despite dropping each of their first round matches. Sulzer fell to third-seeded Scott Mattingly of CMU in a, 14-2, major decision defeat. He rebounded nicely to topple Chase Skonieczny of KSU with a surprising first period pin in just 2:12. Schaner will move on to face the second-seeded Tristen DeShazer of NIU in the third place match tomorrow.
Meanwhile, Sulzer, who dropped a narrow 4-2 decision in his opening match to fourth-seeded Ryan Cubberly of CMU, pulled off the upset of second-seeded Matt Cathell of KSU in his first consolation match. Sulzer defeated Cathell with a 7-2 decision and set up a rematch with Cubberly for an opportunity to claim third place on Sunday.
Freshman Jared Germaine (Saginaw, Mich.-Saginaw Valley) and Khodor Hoballah (Dearborn, Mich.-Dearborn) both tallied first round victories over seeded opponents in their respective weight classes. Germaine defeated third-seeded Christian Cullinan of CMU, 6-5, but then dropped his next two matches to set up a fifth place match with NIU's Nick Smith.
Hoballah defeated fourth-seeded Ryan Garringer of Ohio in the first round before he dropped his next two bouts on the way to setting up a rematch with Garringer for fifth place as well.
Filiberto Colon (Belleville, N.J.-Belleville Senior-Rider), Corey Phillips (Canton, Mich.-Canton), Nick Hendrick (Columbiaville, Mich.-Powers Catholic), Chris Eggert (Dundee, Mich.-Dundee), Nick Whitenburg (Temperance, Mich.-Bedford) and David Wade (Beavercreek, Ohio-Beavercreek) each went 0-2 on day one, but will compete for fifth place on Sunday. Tomorrow's action is slated to begin at 11 a.m.
