Sulzer Reaches Nationals After Placing Third at MAC Championships

Sophomore 157-pounder Aaron Sulzer reached the podium and qualified for nationals with a third place finish.

DEKALB, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) – Sophomore 157-pounder Aaron Sulzer (Cleveland, Ohio-Holy Name) reached the podium and automatically qualified for the NCAA National Championships with a third place finish in his bracket and the Eastern Michigan University wrestling team concluded the 2011 Mid-American Conference Championships with a sixth place finish at the NIU Convocation Center in DeKalb, Ill., Sunday, March 6.
Sulzer avenged a first round defeat to the fourth-seeded Ryan Cubberly of Central Michigan with a first period pin in the third place match. Sulzer recorded his fourth fall of the season against Cubberly in just 2:12 of the first period to finish the tournament with a 2-1 record. His weight class was awarded with three automatic bids into the NCAA Division I National Championship and qualifies him for the prestigious tournament.
Freshman Seth Schaner (Big Rapids, Mich.-Big Rapids) fought his way through the consolation bracket and defeated the fourth-seeded Chase Skonieczny of Kent State Saturday to reach the third place where he faced Tristen DeShazer of Northern Illinois, the second seed in the bracket. DeShazer proved too much for Schaner as he wrestled to an 11-2 major decision victory dropping Schaner to fourth place, but still exceeding expectations for the freshman in the tournament.
EMU finished with 14 team points for sixth place behind Central Michigan, which captured its 10th straight MAC title with 79 points for the tournament. Just 9.5 points separated first through third as Kent State came in a close second place with 73.5 points, just ahead of Buffalo, which tallied 69.5 points.
Ohio (41.5) and Northern Illinois (39.5) took fourth and fifth place, respectively.
Sulzer was the lone automatic bid into the NCAA Division I National Championship of the MAC was allotted just 18 bids as a whole. The NCAA Division I Wrestling Committee will meet in-person to select the remaining 48 at-large qualifiers, which will be announced on March 9.
With Sulzer's automatic bid, it marks the sixth straight season that the Green and White will send someone to the national tournament. This year's championship will be held March 17-20, in Philadelphia, Pa.
