PHILADELPHIA (EMUEagles.com) - Eastern Michigan University sophomore Aaron Sulzer and senior David Wade have been eliminated from the 2011 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships as each went 0-2 on the first day of competition at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pa., Thursday, March 17.
The 157-pounder Sulzer, who took third at the Mid-American Conference Championships, was pitted up against Purdue's Colton Salazar in the first round. Salazar, who took fifth at the Big Ten Championships two weeks ago, had his way with the EMU sophomore as he cruised to a 13-4 major decision victory.
The loss dropped Sulzer to the consolation bracket where he would have an opportunity to wrestleback to third place with a sensational run. Unfortunately, his run would end before it could even gain momentum as he fell, 5-1, his first consolation match to D.J. Meagher of Cornell.
Wade suffered similar fate at the heavyweight class in his final two matches as an Eagle. The senior dropped a narrow, 4-1, decision to Michigan State's Joseph Rizqallah, who took fifth at the Big Ten Championships, in the first round of the championship bracket.
The loss dropped Wade to the consolation bracket and matched him up against fourth-seeded Dominick Russo III of Rutgers. Hanging onto a slim, 2-0, edge heading into the third period, Russo III earned two takedown points, an escape and one point for riding time to defeat Wade, 6-1, and move on.
For Wade, his career comes to an end, but not before he totaled 81 wins in his career to claim sixth place on the all-time list at EMU. Next season, Sulzer will try to do what Wade was able to accomplish this year and repeat as a national qualifier.
This season marked the first time EMU has had multiple national qualifiers in back-to-back years since 1989-90 when the squad recorded three straight years of accomplishing the feat.
