Boilermakers Top Eastern 61-36 at Mackey Arena

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team dropped a road non-conference matchup with the Purdue Boilermakers (9-2) Saturday, Dec. 10 at Mackey Arena. Despite trailing just seven at the half, 29-22 the Eagles (4-6) struggled from the floor shooting 5-of-19 in the second half which led to the 61-36 loss on the road.

The Eagles were led by Derek Thompson (Detroit, Mich.-Melvindale-Southeast Missouri State) offensively after he dropped 15 points on 5-of-14 shooting, while pulling down seven rebounds. Quintin Dailey (Las Vegas, Nev.-Bishop Gorman-Sheridan (Wyo.) J.C.) chipped in with six points. Leading the attack on the glass for the Green and White was Jamell Harris (Euclid, Ohio-Euclid) with eight rebounds. Harris added eight points and four blocks for Eastern. As a team, the Eagles shot 13-of-42 from the floor, good for a .309 percent.

Robbie Hummel was the offensive catalyst for the Boilermakers with 13 points, while Terone Johnson notched nine. On the glass, Hummel led Purdue with eight rebounds. The home team shot 20-for-55 from the field and 9-of-28 from beyond the arc.

Despite falling behind 8-0 quickly, the Eagles were able to use a pair of three-pointers to come back within three, 13-10, at the 11:44 mark in the opening half. EMU and Purdue continued to trade buckets through much of the half, until the Boilermakers went on an 8-2 run to take a 26-17 lead over Eastern with 4:31 remaining. The Eagles continued to fight bringing the game to within seven, 29-22 at the half.

Harris and Thompson led the offense in the first half with six points apiece, while Lampley added five of his own. Dailey contributed five points for the Green and White in the first half, while Harris was also able to grab five boards. The Eagles out-rebounded the Boilermakers 15-12 in the first 20 minutes of play. EMU shot .421 from the floor, 8-of-19, while Purdue was 10-for-24, good for a .417 percent in the first half. Hummel paced Purdue with eight points, while Lewis Jackson and Jacob Lawson chipped in with five points each.

The Boilermakers opened up the scoring in the second half with a quick three-pointer to give Purdue a 10-point, 32-22 lead. Ryne Smith widened the lead for the home squad by knocking down a trio of free-throws, putting the Boilermakers up 35-23. Purdue continued to extend their lead as the Boilermakers took advantage of Eastern's shooting woes. EMU was unable to convert on a field goal attempt in the first 8:48 on the second half. Purdue took a 15-point lead, 42-27 as the Eagles went 1-for-11 from the floor to start the half. After trailing by as many as 26, the Green and White could not surmount the comeback necessary, falling 61-36.

The Eagles continue their nine-game road swing Tuesday, Dec. 20 when they travel to Radford, Va. to take on Big South opponent, Radford University (3-7). Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at the Dedmon Center Arena.
