Eastern gave Ball State their first Mid-American Conference loss

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team took down the Mid-American Conference West Division-leading Ball State University Cardinals Saturday, Oct. 8, in four sets inside the Convocation Center. After taking the first two sets, 25-20 and 25-23, the Eagles dropped the third frame, 16-25, but fired back with a 28-26 fourth set to pick up the win.
EMU now moves to 15-6 (3-3 MAC), while Ball State falls to 16-3 (5-1 MAC).
Paige Roback (Maumee, Ohio-Notre Dame Academy) paced the EMU offense with 18 kills in the match and a .395 attack percentage (18-3-38). Kristen Baker (Mentor, Ohio-Mentor) had a big night offensively with 13 kills, while Ashley Mason (Eastlake, Ohio-Lake Catholic) led the Green and White with 44 assists. Mason and Rachel Iaquaniello (Plymouth, Mich.-Dearborn Divine Child) each had a double-double as Mason had 12 digs while Iaquaniello added 13 to go along with her 13 kills. Haley Stein (Carleton, Mich.-Monroe St. Mary's Catholic Central) anchored the defense with 23 digs.
The Eagles took the opening set, 25-20, to take a quick one-set lead on the MAC West Division-leading Cardinals. Roback led the Eastern Michigan offensive with four kills and a .571 attack percentage. EMU was able to take advantage of Ball State's offensive struggles as the Cardinals hit just .128 (13-8-39) en route to the 1-0 edge.
The Green and White were able to take a commanding two-set lead following the second frame as it topped Ball State, 25-22. Baker, Iaquaniello and Roback paced the Eagles' offense in the set with four kills each. Mason was able to pick up 13 assists in the set, while Stein had nine digs on the defensive side. Ball State continued its offensive struggles with a .102 attack percentage (13-8-49) in the second frame.
The Cardinals' offense proved too much for the Eagles in the third set as Eastern fell, 25-16. EMU hit just .147 (10-5-34) in the frame while the Cardinals countered with a .270 attack percentage (15-5-37). Baker picked up four kills in the frame to lead Eastern's offense. Roback was able to add three kills to her total in the set loss.
Although it took extra points, the Eagles emerged victorious with a 28-26 win in the final set of action. Roback came up big in the final frame with seven kills to lead Eastern to a 3-1 win. Iaquaniello and Baker each chipped-in with five and four kills, respectively. Mason added 17 assists in the final set of action to help EMU to the win.
The Eagles will continue MAC action Friday, Oct. 14 when they travel to Oxford, Ohio to take on the Miami University RedHawks at Millett Hall. The match is set for 7 p.m.
