Eagles Down Zips in Three Sets for Sixth Straight MAC Win

Eastern took their sixth straight match and fourth in straight sets by topping Akron 3-0

The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team won their sixth straight Mid-American Conference match Saturday, Oct. 22 in their annual Dig Pink match at the Convocation Center. Eastern took their fourth match in a row in straight sets dropping the Akron Zips 25-18, 25-21 and 25-21.

EMU now moves to 19-6 (7-3 MAC), while Akron falls to 4-19 (1-9 MAC).

Rachel Iaquaniello (Plymouth, Mich.-Dearborn Divine Child) paced the EMU offense with 16 kills, while Paige Roback (Maumee, Ohio-Notre Dame Academy) put up a double-digit offensive effort with 10 kills. Ashley Mason (Eastlake, Ohio-Lake Catholic) totaled 41 assists in three frames and Haley Stein (Carleton, Mich.-Monroe St. Mary's Catholic Central) led the Eagles with 20 digs in the win. Natalie Folk (Saline, Mich-Saline) notched a career high 11 digs in the Eagles win.

The Eagles took advantage of a .050 attack percentage by the Zips to drop Akron in the opening frame by a 25-18 tally. Eastern was led by Kristen Baker (Mentor, Ohio-Mentor) who hit .429 (4-1-7) while Mason racked up 11 assists in the opening set. Iaquaniello had three kills while Mason and Erin Short (Orrville, Ohio-Orrville) each chipped in with a pair. Stein led the defense for the Eagles with seven digs while Baker came up with two block assists.

Eastern and Akron traded points back and forth throughout the second frame, but EMU came out victorious with a 25-21 second set win. Iaquaniello racked-up seven kills in the set bringing her total up to 10 for the match, while Baker added three more in the frame. Mason chalked up 14 assists while Folk helped the defense with seven digs in the set.

Roback led the final set of the match with seven kills, while Iaquaniello continued her offensive dominance adding six more kills to her total. Mason added 16 more assists in the final set, helping the Eagles to the 25-21 set victory.

The Eagles will continue MAC action Friday, Oct. 28 when they host MAC West rival Northern Illinois in the Convocation Center. The match is set for 7 p.m.
