Westerink and Mebuke win opening match over WMU opponent

COLUMBUS, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University doubles team of senior Miriam Westerink (Rheden, The Netherlands/Thomas a Kempis) and sophomore Nino Mebuke (Tbilsi, Georgia, Russia), defeated the Western Michigan University duo of Nini Sujashvilli/Maggie Remynse (WMU) here Friday, Oct. 21, by an 8-3 score to advance to the second round set for Saturday, Oct. 22.

That EMU team led the Eagles in the second day of competition here at the USTA/ITA Regional Meet hosted by Ohio State University.

Two EMU players played one singles match with a chance to advance to the main draw bracket after opening play in the qualifying draw and both fell short of that target.

Mebuke, seeded No. 3, lost to Chrissie Coffman (Toledo), 6-2, 7-5, to end Mebuke's chances at advancing in singles play.

Sophomore Mariya Toncheva (Burgas, Bulgaria-Sport Scholl Vasil Levski) won two matches on Thursday before falling to Teona Tsertvadze (UIC) in her only match Friday.

The EMU doubles team of Toncheva and freshman Daphne Friedrichs (Hufingen, Germany-Elisa Brandstrom Schule) lost to Alex Forsyth/Marcy Huck (IPFW), 8-6.

The EMU duo of freshman Ankita Bhatia (Gurgaon, India-Delhi Public Schools) and senior Marcela Rivero (Santa Cruz, Bolivia-Saint George) lost to Catrine Bjerrehus/Marie Lazaris (Cleveland State) 8-6.
