Women's Tennis Has Solid First Day at USTF/ITA Qualifier

No. 3 seed Nino Mebuke advances in winner’s bracket

COLUMBUS, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — Head Coach Ryan Ray's Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team turned in a solid performance on the first day of the USTA/ITA Regional Championships here Thursday, Oct. 20, hosted by Ohio State University.

All of EMU's action Thursday took place in the qualifying draw of the singles competition. The top eight finishers from Thursday advanced to the main draw which begins Friday, Oct. 21.

“We had some solid wins and results against conference opponents today,” EMU Head Coach Ryan Ray said.  Mariya (Toncheva) and Nino (Mebuke) will play in the final round of qualifying Friday for a chance to join Miriam  Westerink in the main draw on Saturday.  I'm encouraged by some of the play I saw today, and tomorrow is another day for us to have a chance to compete well.”

Sophomore Nino Mebuke (Tbilsi, Georgia, Russia), seeded No. 3, defeated Rachel Denny (Western Michigan) in her first match, 6-4, 6-3, and advanced to Friday where she play for a chance to advance to the main draw.

Sophomore Mariya Toncheva (Burgas, Bulgaria-Sport Scholl Vasil Levski) came up with two wins, a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Racquel Vescovi (IPFW) and a 6-4, 6-3 victory over No. 6 seed Angelika Jogasuria (Akron) in her second match.

Freshman Daphne Friedrichs (Hugingen, Germany-Elisa Brandstrom Schule) lost to IPFW's Anita Henstrosa in her first match Thursday, 6-0, 6-1, and lost to Carrine Bjerrehus (Cleveland State) in a consolation match.

Freshman Ankita Bhatia (Gurgaon, India-Delhi Public Schools) lost to  Olga Shkundina (Akron), 6-2, 6-3,in her first match and bounced back to beat Frederique Sunstrum (IPFW), 6-3, 6-3, in her consolation match.

Marcela Rivero (Santa Cruz, Bolivia-Saint George) lost to Emily Reuland (BGSU), 4-6, 7-5, 7-5, in her first match before taking a 7-6, 6-4 victory over Maria Nivia (WMU).
